I agree with nyclon. Just point it out to his employer about the danger of leaving UK now while his immigration status is under scrutiny. He could be denied re-entry and lose his work privileges.

Yes, but you don't want to test the water at UK border. I'd only leave UK if it's a matter of life or death, like serious illness in my family.
