Hi
Not sure if we have many Belgian expats with school children on here:
My eldest will start secondary school in france and I was wondering how much of a gap (or not) there is between BE year 5 and FR 6eme.

For UK Expats in the same situation, did you choose English as the first foreign language? It feels like a cop out but I'm concerned that my child will need to get up to speed on a lot of other subjects.

English as first foreign language isn't a cop-out; it's important to get up to speed in the way they teach it here - specifically vocab associated with grammar, which all Fr kids learn in Ecole Primaire, and is indispensable for classes further up the line - not only French, but other foreign languages too. It just means that the rest of the lesson content is a wee bit easier, but kids need time-out too, and will reinforce confidence in the classroom - not least socially.
