Finding work as Chiropractor or Acupuncturist in France

Hi, excited to have found this forum!
I've wanted to live in France since I was a child and am finally ready to make it happen. I've read that chiropractic isn't covered under national healthcare, and that acupuncture is considered "illegal" but still practiced anyway. Does anyone have resources that can help me find an associate position (working for someone else) as either a chiropractor, acupuncturist, or both?

At one time, I was near-fluent in French, though recognize I will need to practice before I move. I'm hoping the job I find would want someone who speaks English and this would be a strong enough reason to obtain the necessary work visa. (Yeah, me and every other English-speaking immigrant, right?)

My ideal location would be Biarritz, but I'm open to (almost) anywhere if that's where the work is. Warmer weather is preferred. Thanks so much for any advice or help.

Welcome to the forum. Now, the tough part. Chiropractic services aren't recognized by the Sécu (health services) however there are some chiropractors scattered around France. So to some extent they must have some way to get themselves licensed/certified or whatever. I suspect it is similar to the status of an "osteopath" here in France - whose services are also not covered by the national insurance program.

You could start here for more information (it's a site that describes the qualifications required for various professions and has links to some of the professional organizations.)
Chances are, you would have to do some re-training in order to work in France - if only to get a better understanding of the legal definition and limitations of the field in France.

Why do you think acupuncture is illegal? I thought that, on the contrary, it is classed as a medical procedure. So entirely legal and credible and can only be carried out by medically qualified persons.

It's normal in France for practitioners to operate independently under the 'profession libérale'. status. I think it would be unusual for one consultant to employ another to work as their employee.

Acupuncture isn't illegal, as a matter of fact. I'm not sure if there is a qualification for someone who is only an acupuncturist, but there are a number of medical doctors in my area who list acupuncture as one of their "specialties." It may be the case that only a medical doctor can perform acupuncture on a patient (or perhaps that if performed by a medical doctor then it may be reimbursable by the Sécu and/or mutuelles).

You have to be a médical doctor now to administer acupuncture, it wasn't always so abd there are very likely acupuncturists who had a clientèle who have conrinud to practice 'behind closed doors'. Doctolib created a bit of a kerfuffle fairly recently when it said it would continue to list them and various other non govt approved practitioners on its website.. Many of these practitioners also openly attend the bien être exhibitions such as the one being held in Tarbes this weekend.

It's extremely unlikely that any of these practitioners would employ a foreigner and there's no need in France anyway as the market is pretty saturated.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I should have said acupuncture is only legal if performed by an MD. In the US, an acupuncture license (LAc) is separate from a MD.
If I must focus on chiropractic, that's fine. I've contacted Association Française de Chiropraxie and a couple of other resources. I'll continue to research but thanks for the early input.

It doesn't look like the OP has returned to the forum in nearly a year now, so it's possible s/he won´t see your request for follow up. I think it may be time to close this thread - but feel free to start up a new thread to see what information is available.
