We are a family of three planning to move to Perth Northern suberbs in May 2010. It seems dificult to get financial advise in the UK from someone who understands both systems, particlarly aound pensions and bringing money into Australia. Has anyone had a reasonable experience with a financial advisor that they would be willing to put usin touch with?

Thanks in advance

Hi Mark,

If you go to the migration shows or get the magazines you'll find quite a few financial advisors in the UK that deal with both the UK and Australian systems. We found quite a few at the migration shows and interviewed three of them and went with a company called Montfort International who were very good (but probably not the cheapest).

It really depends on how complicated your situation is - we went with Montfort since they were the only ones that gave us any confidence that they really understood our situation (businesses, properties in the UK and overseas, private pensions, NHS pension etc.).

Regards,
Karen

Hi Karen
Many thanks for the tips - we will start with these routes.

Hi Mark,

Alan Collett posted some useful information but unfortunately I couldn't let it stand since he was promoting his own services and website, even though he is a migration agent there are some rules moderators have to abide by.

I am also a CA who is qualified in both countries.

If you wish to remove my postings - so be it. I am surprised though, as the Tax FAQ schedule I attached to my reply answers many questions asked by persons such as the OP, and I would have thought that Mods should give a choice as to recommended advisors, or make no recommendation at all.

Best regards.

Hi Alan,

The rules are quite clear about self promotion and we ALL have to abide by them. If not then any of us with businesses that could help ex-pats could be promoting ourselves all the time (and I'm NOT suggesting that you do that all the time).

If someone else was recommending your services, which has happened in the past, that would be different. I can't recommend you since I've never used your services but if another mod wants to recommend you (and I know they have) then that's fine.

Usually we try to point members to government sites without any commercial bias where possible.

Regards,
Karen

Thanks

Hi mark....

if you wanted to send your finances over to australia, and get your pension sent over on a monthly basis, then why dont you go to a fx company? I knew someone that moved over to spain, he went through one, seemed pretty simple. theres a site to compare the companies which i used recently... comparethecurrencymarket . com ... i think there are other ones aswell.. but i found this one worked out fine.

Hope this helped you!
Thanks for the tip - will take a look.

Hi Mark,

Have you got particular questions as the specialists tend to focus on different areas. Eg. Pensions, Tax, Businesses, Investing in Aus, imact of your finances on your visa etc.

I think it depends on how big the firm is - the one we used covered all of it!

Hi Jim,

Our questions relate to UK pensions, cash savings, house sale proceeds, life and income protection plans and how our visa status will effect these. My feeling is that the timing of some aspects is critical.

You are right - it's very important to start planning to not get caught out on timing issues.
