Employment in North Perth?

3752 Views 10 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mesmer
Hi there guys, I'm still searching for something to do. I used to teach basic I.T. to people with alcohol, narcotics and mild to moderate mental health issues, also group work, motivational and goal setting workshops.

Does *anyone* have any ideas as to where I might be able to find a job? I've tried all the usual suspects (seek etc), but there's just nothing coming up.

I've been saying to myself for several weeks now that maybe this isn't going to work out and as each day passes I'm thinking I might be right.

My partner has a job, but things are proving really difficult on one wage.

I'm just about to turn 46, so maybe I'm past it as well? I've attached a copy of my CV to this posting if anyone would like to comment or perhaps point me in the right direction.

Many thanks in advance.

Alan

Hi , your not past it!! Could you perhaps start up a little business on your own perhaps teaching basic IT skills. I used to volunteer for a charity in the UK teaching basic computers to the over 60s. There seemed to be a market for it here in the UK. Could you find a venue that could rent a room equiped with pcs then advertise in the local paper? I am also moving to Perth in July and was wondering what the job market is like. My husband has got a sponsored job.
Hi mesmer,
Have you actually applied for a job online or checking the online job websites and haven't see a job that you maybe qualified for or that interests you?

In briefly reviewing your resume, I saw three things that stood out. The first one is in regards to your email and website with both end in "uk". I think in anyone reviewing your resume might be confused of where you are located. Even though you do have an address and a phone number in Australia. The "uk" does stand out. People might think you only live temporarily in Australia? The second item is when checking out your website and the "contact me" link, you still show to have a UK address and mobile phone number. Just a suggestion that you might want to consider updating to your Australian contact information. Unless you have still have a business in UK that requires you to keep the UK contact information?

The third item is in regards to your resume. It does not have a "career objective" of what type of job you are looking for. An example of an Australian CV template can be found at : Free resume template | Resumes & Cover Letters Tips | Career FAQs
There are other websites with more Australian CV templates for you to choose from. Another website with some useful information: Australia: Applying for jobs | Prospects.ac.uk

Not all jobs are posted in seek.com.au , mycareer.com.au But you might want to check out the websites of companies near your area. Most companies do have a careers section link with job openings too. In addition, you mention that you used to teach basic I.T. for people with alcohol, narcotics, etc. issues. Have you looked at these type of facilities that treat these people if there is some type of career training that might require a teacher for I.T.?

Some career counselors that I've seen on tv here in the US state that sometimes you have to be proactive in finding that job. That means even if there is no job posting, you can start sending your resume to companies that you feel your experience would be a fit. Or join a professional network such as World's Largest Professional Network | LinkedIn This website also has job postings that you may not see in seek or mycareer.

Hi there guys, many thanks for the responses. I'm going to be changing my email address to a .com.au domain just as soon as I can. I take your point about it looking as though I may still be in the UK despite there being a Perth address on it.

I guess the part about career objectives is variable depending on the job I'm applying for?

I've been scouring all the well known job sites obviously with little success and I've been in contact with a number of the organisations in Perth that look likely. Places seem happy to receive my CV but that's as far as it goes. I'm really at a loss now as to where to turn next.

I have also thought about teaching I.T. again on my own but there are a lot of companies in Perth already doing that and there seems to be a pre-requisite for a training qualification known as the Cert IV which is very expensive and time consuming to get (and employers won't put people through it because of the expense and time commitment to get it)

I'm wondering if my skills might be useful to other sectors? Would anyone have any ideas what sectors though?

Many thanks guys.

Hi, thanks for your reply, appreciated. The point above is really interesting. Yes, I've applied for quite a few jobs online, but none of them were what I was doing before - I'm thinking that the job I had before actually doesn't exist here (unless anyone knows different?)

The second part is very relevant as well - very, few of the jobs I've seen online actually interest me, and those that do require experience in fields that I don't have and/or qualifications I don't have.

I do appreciate that my field of expertise might be seen by some outside of it as being pretty narrow, but I'd have thought my skillset and experience would have been transferable to other jobs (though what even I don't know!)

Thanks

Alan
The moderator has removed my CV because it is apparently advertising. This is utterly ridiculous. You try to get some help from other ex-pats and that's the attitude you get hit with. Disgusting. I mean really seriously disgusting. That moderator should be ashamed.

So much for helping each other.

No doubt I'll now get banned for criticising

I am not sure if you already visited the website to the Government of Western Australia - Department of Training and Workforce Development? Maybe they have some information that can assist you in addition to what you are already working on.
