EA's Summary Statement - A prank on us?

Hi,

I am in the process of getting all my documents ready for EA's migration skills assessment. I have already finished three career episodes and the CPD. Everything has been going well. Currently I am looking into the final part of the report - summary statement - and things are not going so well anymore.

After analysing the template of summary statement and each of its elements, I am puzzled and shocked - my eyes are big and my eyebrows have still not returned from the back of my head. The reason why I am so perplexed by it is the complex wording. I do not think I am a language philologist, but I have a pretty decent grasp of English (IELTS 8.5). After reading the description of competency elements, however, I feel incompetent... utterly and totally inadequate.

Am I the only one who thinks that Engineers Australia or whoever is behind creating this horrendous Word table is just pulling a prank on us? I mean, putting as many fancy words in a random order does not necessarily create a coherent sentence. These competency elements are so abstract that you almost have to guess what they could have meant by it. I realise it is a formal document, but please, do realise that this is a total overkill! I want to be able to make sense!

I am sorry for this post, but I just needed to find a place to vent. Guys, am I the only person who feels this way? Does anyone have any good suggestions how to get through this horrible torture device that they call summary statement?

Cheers!

I went through EA MSA in 2013, and not sure about the current requirement, thus, so far I can provide 2 samples of summary statement (1 of them from myself - Civil Eng) for you guys reference, wish all EA'ers got success in MSA.

Hi happycory!
Would you still have these samples? I had some comments from EA and I am afraid I had a wrong approach, I will have to re-write interely my career episodes and CDR and I am interested in examples (so I could write it the right way this time).
Thank you!!

Same question as topic starter asked I asked professional linguist who helped me with summary statement. I asked him why they are asking questions that I dont even understand what do they mean...
I was told that actually this is exactly how do they teach in institutes, this is how its written in their work programms. Its one of their ways how to assess your education- if you dont understand the questions meaning you are not educated enough. And it seems like to be true as I tried few times to google exact phrases from summary statements and got as results links to work programs and description of some courses with 100% same phrases.
Yes, it very abstract because it should be applicable to any profession.
But its not too complicated after you understand what do they want.
By the way - its not only for migrants. I have seen table which you have to fill in to be registered with EA (even locals are doing it) - its even worse...)

Hi Ola,

Is't possible for you to share with me your summary statement?
My assessor has returned and asked me to modify as required.

I just need to know is't that for each unit in the element stated in the Appendix guideline is what we need to capture.
E.g. if under PE 1.6 has six units from (a) to (f), does it mean that I need to cover all in my summary statement? If yes, does it mean I need to link all the six units from (a) to (f) with each Career Episode? If yes, what if that unit is not related at all with the career episode?

Hope you or someone out there can assist.

Thanks!

Regards,
Thomas

Hi All,

I have written all the 3 career episodes and trying to complete the summary statement. There are quite a few items that i do not understand and unable to give an explanation for same. I think a sample would help me understand how to go about these. Can anyone help me with approved samples.
