I just noticed that DIAC (Department of Immigration and Citizenship) has changed its name to the more ominous sounding DIBP (Department of Immigration and Border Protection). I believe this is the fourth name this department has had in the past 10 years (prior to DIAC it was DIMA, and before that, DIMIA). The Commonwealth seems to be following in the footsteps of other Western countries such as the US (Customs and Border Protection), UK (UK Border Agency), and Canada (Canada Border Services Agency) in emphasizing the border security aspect of the agency's mission. I'm guessing that is also tied to all the "stop the boats" rhetoric of the new government as well. Too bad they picked such an unattractive acronym...
