With the rise of WOKE and things like it I thought you might like to have the latest updates, including the death of democracy.

As you all know (ha!) we don't want to associate ourselves with anything to do with slavery. Also as you all know democracy came out of ancient Athens - only it was not democracy as we know it, you could only vote if you were Athens born and not a slave. Which brings me to the point - anything to do with slavery is out, out. This means that nasty idea of democracy conjured up by the slave owning rich. Another point is that most current definitions of democracy include the concept of an independent legal system.

We, in western Europe, very lucky to have the US showing us the way in these tricky new WOKE times.

First, the US is sticking to its byzantine Presidential Election system which is not based on "one person - one vote". Really democracy bent out of shapeso as to be unrecognisable. And don't forget that some States (south) still try to disenfranchise some sectors of society.

Second, the recent Supreme Court comedy theatre shows that the US justice system is not independent, but based on party political gerrymandering.

Before any Europeans join in the criticism of it is worth considering the history of democracy here. There are not many European countries that were democratic before 1945, including the UK and France.

I value your informed and democratic comments.

From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli;
USMC fight song. You might want to ask what a bankrupt US was doing creating the USMC and sending them to North Africa more than 200 years ago.

You might want to ask why so many towns around the Mediterranean are so far from the sea.

You might want to ask why Macron is proposing statues to honor the soldiers involved in the rape of Casino?

BTW democracy doesn't really exist if the judicial system is above democratic control . A dictator in robes is still a dictator. BTW for centuries independent judges ruled slavery was perfectly legal

Extremely touchy and divisive subject in France, all the more so since the absolutely disgraceful edition of Valeurs Actuelles depicting Danièle Obono in chains. The Macron government seems hell bent on making things worse with its stance on the matter. Makes you wonder what, if anything, democracy and justice systems have to do with the issue of slavery (which continues to this day in France and elsewhere, though people seem to prefer to turn a blind eye).

The USMC is, quite simply, a fighting force to be carried on US Navy ships and is a part of the US Navy.

As to the North Africa thing, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Barbary_War

It was down to "...pirates from the Barbary States seizing American merchant ships and holding the crews for ransom..."

(If every country suspended the use of its armed forces because of bankruptcy most of the world's wars would not have been fought. Probably a good thing.)

No idea. Maybe they couldn’t stand hearing ‘there aint nothing like a dame’ being bellowed out night after night from passing vessels.
