Usually our "art et essai" cinema has "crowds" almost reaching double figures - but I couldn't believe the queues last Sunday afternoon. I was around for the original so didn't need to see that film - went to see La Taupe instead.

Maggie was never very popular in Scotland, using the Scots as a test-bed for the poll tax. And didn't she suggest that the trigger temperature for cold weather payments should be colder than in England?

I haven't quite reached the age where I can claim the winter fuel allowance. I don't suppose there's much hope of the UK government setting up a summer electricity allowance to pay for the air conditioning for expats in warmer climes.

The review I got of the film was that Meryl Streep gives a stellar performance in what my friend characterized as a "dumb" film.

Then again, it took me a while to figure out what film the French were talking about when they kept referring to "John Edgar Hoover" - I always figured that the J in J Edgar must stand for something far more embarrassing than "John."

I think that a lot of the interest – and admiration – for Mme T is because she is a woman who, in a male dominated political world, had to fight hard all the way even against some of the members of her own party. The fact that she not only made it to the top but made such a mark on her time makes her a remarkable woman.

Even today women who make it to the top of their career, especially in male dominated areas – have to be better, more motivated and perhaps more ruthless than their male counterparts.

So politics apart, I have to say: chapeau, Mme T!!

ps don't think you will qualify for the winter fuel allowance, you have to have been receiving it when you changed countries to continue to get it.

Hands down to Meryl Streep for a great performance. Hope she gets the Oscar for Best Actress.
