I had a little discussion with DIAC officer at their FB page as per them it's highly competitive system .i.e for sure those who have more points their chances are brighter but one more catch is that it's also depends on the need of australian labour market
Eg :- if they require say 1000 mechanical engineer to fill the urgent requirement than they will send 1000 EOI to those candidate who have maximum points so it's a cut off based system just like taking admission through some common test and also this cut off will change every month so one can check what are their chances to get an invitation

It is based totally how competitive is your field like if 1000 mechanical engineer have 70 above points and you have 65 than wait until next round of invitation which is again not certain as I said it's totally based on their requirement.

On positive side ,if you do get invitation then I think it will be a matter of 2-3 months to get your VISA

So guys pray that your field should not be highly competitive

Yeah, like what Chin 2 mentioned, its going to be competitive. Under the current and soon to be abolished system, you apply and wait for them to assign you a CO, which I believe is guaranteed. But with the new Skillsets, new applicants are at the mercy of DIAC, as decision is based on their descretion.

Applicants will not have to wait that long.
The first set of invites will be sent out in Aug 2012.

It is proposed that SkillSelect will automatically issue invitations once per month, with the first round of invitations sent on 1 August 2012. Invitations will be issued to the highest ranking EOIs in descending order, subject to occupation ceilings. The date and time of submission may be used to separate those who score equally to ensure that the number of invitations issued at any one time matches both the number of visa places and the processing resources available. Those who don’t meet the pass mark or don’t score highly enough in a particular invitation round will not be issued an invitation. Departmental officers are not involved in the selection process.

My bad..sorry abt that....
The last time I read it on the migrationblog(3 months back) there was definitely a line which said that the first batch of applicants will be intimated in Jan'13...But Aug'12 is awesome...this means that the waiting period will be even less..:)
