You should get a debut card automatically with your bank account. It is probably best to wait 3-6 months before you apply for credit card. Just so you build up some history.

hello, i got a NAB visa debit card that works just like a credit card but the amount is taken straight from your funds. normally when you use your card to pay at the register you will be asked whether credit savings or cheque. but if you like a credit card, you should build up a credit history like mentioned above - up to 6 months

Credit card is not easy to get, you have to have a good balance in your account and have to b regular with your bills, as everyone said, you have to build your credit history and if at all you plan to buy in Au in near future people strongly recommend not having a credit card as that reduces your borrowing capacity.

...and another thing, just noticed you are arriving in July on a 457, that's too long coz the moment your visa grant letter walks in that's when the meter starts running, you have almost 4 months of your visa gone by the time you enter the country..
