I just read about a biometric card in another thread. Do I need to be issued a card once I get to the UK? If so, when?

This is the first time I've ever seen that I will need a card. I thought the visa would suffice!

No you will not be issued a biometric resident card with your current visa. The vignette in your passport is your visa. Until recently, only those who applied for visas from inside the UK received biometric cards. The rules are changing and biometric cards are being phased in for those who apply for their visas outside of the UK. Starting with applications made 31 May 2015 and after, applicants from US will be issued a 30 day vignette in their passport. They must arrive in the UK within those 30 days and collect their biometric resident permit from a designated post office within 10 days. Since you applied before this, you will not be issued a BRP. When you apply for FLR (M) in 2 1/2 years, then you will be issued with a BRP.
