Both kids today even though I try to keep the stray cats away from our home "it's impossible" got clawed while trying to feed the cat like he was a dog.

So.... I immediately took them to the rabies clinic, the 4 year old has already gone through the 4 shots so he only gets two injection's but my 9 year old granddaughter has to get all 4 shots in sequence.

My granddaughter had to be held down by 4 people in order to get both of her arms injected, and she bit me in my forearm, I still have the bite mark.

I'm almost positive the in-laws 5 year old boy who died recently had rabies because they showed a photo of him tied down to the hospital bed.

We have an infestation of cats and I have a hard time keeping them away from our home.

Rabies creeps up without symptoms at first and at a certain point nothing will save you, so there are no symptoms for something like 2 weeks into it, so if the kids get scratched by the cat, get them immediately to the rabies clinic, it's 350 pesos per shot, first time is a series of 4 shots the second time around the rabies shots is reduced to just two injections 3 days apart.

A scratch from a cat can kill you or a bite or a slight scratch from the cute street puppy's teeth while petting him, it will kill you, and you won't know it until it's too late, we have lost Expats to cute puppies and the Expat had no idea and neither did the doctors until it was too late, and even they traveled back to the US succumbed to Rabies.

Sorry to hear that Mark, sad and frustrating. Our 2 Labs have had their Rabies shots and the cats, don't bother us, the dogs bail them up and they steer clear, the dogs have fun. The other day it was a blue kingfisher that must have run into the glass pool fence and couldn't find an escape route, I caught it and let it fly off in the back yard away from the dogs.
Perhaps if your granddaughter bit you maybe a rabies booster?
Hope the grandkids are ok.

Cheers, Steve.

Good point, I'm thinking I should just get the 4 shots anyway because of the many animals.

Good post Mark

Can I add that in the rainy season Leptospirosis which is a diseases that is mostly associated with rat urine but can be spread by other animals is an issue.
if untreated it’s also a killer, Andy Holmes the U.K. Olympic rower is believed to have died from this.

Other half’s son works in a hospital and he said cases are high and he came off his bike in the floods and he sent me a photo of his ankle swollen around 2 weeks later and he had head aches. Thankfully they did the tests and he came up positive and was treated but it seems to be a very common illness that can be very serious more so when the floods appears If left untreated and not recognised.

Good point Newfie, you never want to go into the water if you have any rashes or sores but also try to avoid floodwaters.

The public clinics charge around 300 pesos per shot even though I've been told the shots are free, it turns out it's just gossip or poor advice. From my experience with the kids and in-laws, the Tuberculosis medication for toddlers, kids and adults is free and it's in the same clinic as the shots.

So many cats at my other half’s place and on my visit one had kittens although only one kitten survived. We had a snake enter the property one day and the cats set about it. Not a venomous snake and only about 2 and a half feet long.

The cats also chased that damn spider I tried to grab for a photo but wow that spider was quick and she was carrying her egg sack too.

Those rabies shots are rather unpleasant too. Maybe it was just me, but my arm throbbed like the bejesus.
It was many years ago now, but, stupidly, I tried to break up a fight between my dog and the neighbours dog and my ankle got bit quite bad. Both dogs were vaccinated but went for the shots just in case.
I remember being shocked when I was handed the bill, as I knew it was supposed to be free. I brought that up with the Dr and she said "yes the vaccination is free but my time for administering it is not"
So there you go

If you go to a private hospital the cost of 4 rabies shots will be 15,000 pesos, I know this because one of our Expats wanted to get reimbursed by Tricare.

I mentioned that the rabies shots in total 4 injection's will be 1200 pesos total at the municipality clinic or city clinics marked, the fellow Expat was unaware of this, so something to be aware of and look for now.

We constantly battle with cats and rats in and around our home to I've had to install metal screens to keep the cat out of the house but they climb all the time on our roof, our roof is two stories high.

There were at least 30 people waiting for their rabies shots today.

There used to be an early morning collection (trike driver with cage) and a 100-200 pesos per dog payment but the foreign influence, animal rights pressure and AID money stopped that practice.

Next, in order to get around the collection of animals mainly dogs, there was a horrible way to hide the animals all crammed into a hidden cage on the jeepny or trucks, that created check points and searches to end that practice.

Or the meat was sold from vendors but with the changed laws the vendors were reported and arrested.

I don't notice the in-laws or neighbors eating dog anymore either but it was a frequent practice before on birthdays, special occasions or the New Year.

As far as I know, the current practice of riding the neighborhood of animals is ditching them in other areas and that's what's been happening with the cats or more like kittens, the young cats show up from the road and try to find refuge but end up wild and in our backyard or outside dirty kitchen/garage areas.

Seems we don't suffer those issues here Mark, not on the streets any way but I do see every morning 4 or 5 dogs on the beach going for their morning walk and play with each other, never bother human walkers on the ocean and go home after half an hour, the afternoon? No dogs. They are just friendly pets and don't bother a soul.
I do understand what you mean about the dogs in the poorer provinces and sad to see. Bens family are guilty also, have seen them get puppies and kittens over the years for the kids and when they hit 6 to 12 month old they are abandoned to roam the streets looking for a feed, no vets or jabs and usually live 3 to 4 years, mange, malnutrition etc.

OMO.

Cheers, Steve.

Yes HK, kangaroo, crocodile and emu, good feed, dog I won't come at. Any different to Beef, Lamb, pork, goat, Chicken, Fish? Dogs are a lot different to my way of thinking, we have 2 Labradors here would you like to have a go?
Camels are on the menu these days also in Oz. Thousands of years in other cultures.

Each to their own.

Cheers, Steve.

I've been offered dog many times by the in-laws my first meeting and even raw marinated (Kelaguen) in Guam (Filipino neighbors) with hot peppers, also way back in 1984 while TAD to Subic Bay Afritada style and ? It was okay If cooked or marinated raw right you won't know, so something to be wary about my brother-in-law made a beef soup with his dog and it tasted like beef stew my wife's cousin brought over a big bowl of dog, ugh...it smelled like like wet dog big chunks Afritada style and nobody ate it.

So dog is served like beef stew, raw marinated or like Afritada. The dogs when collected before ended up mainly in Baguio.

But to get back to the topic, most of the people waiting to get their rabies shot at the clinic were there because of a cat scratch or bite.

But...if you're standing and waiting at the rabies clinic you'll see so many waiting but then again it's anywhere from two shots if your second time or 4 shots your first time with rabies, there were at least 30 people waiting and I showed up 2 hrs after the clinic opens.

Rabies clinics are only open for a limited time like a half day and on certain days like Tuesday and Friday starting at 1 pm, I suppose the hospital anytime but get ready the cost per injection difference is 300 at the clinic to 5000 at the hospital.

In USA, all dogs and cats get rabies shot every few years. It's the law. The dog/cat gets a metal thing on its collar with date of the shot.

Owners also register the pets with local government who also checks the veterinary rabies shots.

People who work around dogs and cats, or other risks, can ask for rabies shots to prevent infection.

So hk blue, get shots for your pets at a veterinary facility.

HK? get rid of the bird eating cats. Simple. We have 2 Labradors and locked in on a 2,000 M2 lot, walk them we do on the beach with harnesses and leads, They had their Rabies shots, we have had them now near 2 years and while frightening to most with their loud deep barks are as harmless as a lamb. The neighbours cats don't come here now as our kids bail them up, I see more birdlife in the last 12 months including the blue kingfishers and other native wildlife, cats are natural killers either for fun or a feed and decimate the wildlife from reptiles to birds.
Many have cats claiming they keep the rats and mice at bay, they only come because of food scraps/unsavoury environment. We don't have cats, rats nor mice here.

Cheers, Steve.

@HK Blues

My 2 dogs don't decimate the the wild life as cats do.
Look at the world wide figures of extinctions as the result from cats, not rocket science.
We had a chocolate point Burmese that was well fed but every day or second day would present it's latest kill at the door, not for food but for the chase, bird, lizard, snake it didn't care, dead. We had that cat 10 years and I don't miss it one bit. Never again. Scourge of the earth.

OMO.

Yep...pets come with their own positives and negatives. Dogs disturbing the neighbourhood peace and quiet seems to be a particular problem in the Philippines, wouldn't you agree?
