Hi there,

We (me, my spouse and our daughter) are planning our PR validation trip on October 5. My wife has few jewelry items (mostly gold) that she would like to bring along. I hear there is a $900 pp limit for duty-free import. However, in other forums I've read that since these are her personal effects, there is not tax imposed.
  • Do we have to declare our personal jweleries at customs ?
  • If so, do we have to pay any taxes even though these are for personal use and have been with us for years ?

Also, I will be carrying USD cash as banks in my country don't allow international transfer neither issue international cards. As the exchange rates in airport and banks in Sydney are terrible, where is a good place to exchange USD for AUD and what rates they offer, and commission or fees levied ?
