Are you hot where you are?

Let me make you an offer? I want you to imagine that I am sitting in my very big walk in frig with a glass of cool white wine in my hand. The raging temperatures outside are of no concern to me.

Do you want to join me in a cyberspace "cool in"? You huddle together for warmth, but keep a respectable distance for cooling off?

Well, so much for your imagination? In fact I am sweltering here in 30 deg with a storm not far away, probably like you?

Happy perspiration!

We only hit 31 today, instead of the predicted 34, but it was hot and miserable. I got us one of those fancy bladeless fans, which help a bit, but the big selling point was that they run very quietly during the night (when it's supposed to get down to 19 overnight).

We got thunder rumblings, but only a spatter of raindrops. Let's see how it goes tomorrow!
Cheers,
Bev

Yep, sweltering and sweaty up in my roof apartment. Keep all the shades closed. Doesn't help that I got some sort of stomach thingie from...no joke...produce (wasn't there just a thread about this lol?) Broccoli even. I bought some from one of those markets yesterday but hindsight maybe it had been sitting out in the hot sun too long. I have no idea. What I do know is very shortly after I began to eat it last night, my stomach started cramping up and that lasted for another 16-hours. I finally took some probiotics (which I happened to buy last week) which seemed to instantly help cut down on the pain/cramping. I'm always shocked when things actually help. So basically I've just been in bed, sweating in a puddle, and sleeping all day. I keep shifting sweat-puddle positions (I myself am the puddle), lying in all differnt strange positions and angles, with or without pillows, who knows. Sideways, upside down on the bad, haha. I wasn't really able to get up till around 6 p.m. Don't be jealous of my fun day! Stomach still feels wonky but I'm going to try for some broth...nice, hot broth...to go with the hot steamy apartment....ugh haha

Hot, yes. 34°C most afternoons but nights are cool around 15°C.
We rise early and get all the important stuff done before 11am.
Wooden shutters closed, windows too.
Around 2pm on goes the ceiling fan then at 4pm the aircon set at 24°C.
At 8pm the doors & windows fly open.

We were hoping to catch some of that rain you're getting Atlantic way but it seems to be heading too far north :(
We planted lots of shrubs, bushes & climbers during the rainy springtime and now we'll have to water 'em all through the heat. Rainwater reserves are still plentiful but for how long?

We stocked up on 4 cases of sparkling mineral water from one of the local producers.
Chin-chin with a glass of "Reine des Basaltes"!

Here it has been mid thirties during the day for days and days .. dropping to 28° during the night. But, after a bout of rain during last night, this evening we are at 23° and it's only 22h30 :)

So our doors and windows don't so much fly open at 8pm but are opened gingerly around 4 or 5 in the early morning hoping that some slightly cooler air might be hanging about outside.

We had the most humongous storm during the night with mutifarious flashes, bangs and very loud cracks including a couple of power outages - fortunately the power was quickly restored. The upside was lots of refreshing rain and a tumble downwards in the outside temperature .. such a relief as it has been unusually hot for Brittany.

Hope you feel better soon Soleil .. it's bad enough struggling with very high temperatures outside but if you're not well it must be doubly difficult.

Well, I should have thought after all the rain you had in the winter a bit of sun and heat would be welcomed. July, and all the lakes here are still almost full and the farmers have only just turned on the irrigation systems. I do have aircon which helps.

I developed a severe allergy to broccoli five years ago and it is in my view the Devil’s own vegetable. Hope you are felling better. I have found the fermented milk acts better than pro- biotics.

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone! Yeah, this is certainly bad weather for having a stomach problem. It's still there today (the upset/crampy stomach), not worse, but not gone yet....ah well. Isault, I'll have to see if I can find some lait fermenté if I can motivate myself to go to the store today.

I had storms last night, too. Not as bad as yours, sue. I left my windows open though, for the most part. There was a really nice breeze flowing through in the morning, like you said DejW. I stood between the skylights where there is an airflow and it just felt so good, that nice, cool rain air gushing by.

It keeps clouding up here, with the sound of thunder in the distance, but if we get any rain at all, it's just a few drops. At least the clouds keep the temperatures from rising for a time during the day.

Extended forecast here shows the high temperature dropping by a degree or two a day through the rest of the week, with decent nighttime temperatures on the way. Luckily we missed the forecasted 34 C on Sunday by a good 2 or 3 degrees.

I've broken down and got one of those fancy bladeless fans (that also serves as a heater in the winter) and an air purifier (well, at least avoids blowing the dust around!). Works reasonably well - and I must say the fan is definitely quiet for running at night while we're trying to sleep.

Problem seems to be that, with the sun setting close to 10 pm, it really doesn't start cooling down at night until the wee hours of the morning - and by the time we reach the predicted "low" temperature for the night (18 or 19 C) it's 6 or 7 am and the sun is high enough to start the heating cycle all over again.

Ah well, it's summer and I guess it's supposed to be warm.

And Soleil - don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I developed 4 days or so of "tummy troubles" that seem to stem from having over-exerted myself in the warm weather. If that's what you've got, it will definitely pass. But it takes time and taking it easy. Feel better!
Cheers,
Bev

I am thinking of buying one of those "fancy bladeless fans (that also serves as a heater in the winter) and an air purifier - if it's the one I'm thinking of (starts with the letter D) it's not supposed to blow things around. Have you found it helpful Bev? I ask because it's currently a huge outlay for me given the AUD exchange rate has been very low for quite some time and is continuing to fall with no end in sight (thanks Donald - not!). Can't make up my mind whether to just go for the bladeless fan.

So far, I am very happy with the bladeless fan - though the cost is definitely "a tad" high. Big advantages (for me, at least) is the quiet operation, the remote control and the ability to choose between a "concentrated" direction of moving air and the "diffuse" setting, which is softer.

It doesn't actually cool the air, at least not any differently than a conventional fan.

And I admit I also have designs on using the heating feature come the colder weather in a few months. It strikes me as potentially safer and more efficient than the old electric heaters we have here in the house.

Net - net I'm happy with my purchase, but you have to factor in your own needs and, of course, your budget. One thing I've noticed is that it looks as if the manufacturer is shifting the entire line over to models that can be controlled using a mobile phone and app in addition to the remote control. That feature seems to add a good 100€ to the list prices, and frankly, for my purposes is pretty much useless. I suspect that some of the prices on the non-mobile phone controlled models reflect an "end of model" discount, which could be interesting.
Cheers,
Bev

EH, thanks! And Bev, maybe! I'm pretty sure it had to do with what I ate on Saturday night, though. I went from feeling a-OK (albeit hot n sweaty during the day) to BAM stomach cramping that didn't let up all night and is still lurking after eating my dinner that night. It's definitely something I ate....which is a bummer since I made a nice stir fry lol and had to throw it all away! And I just want to feel okay normal. But, it'll pass

It was pretty nice here the past few hours, nice and breezy. But it's supposed to be warmer again tomorrow, eh

Several of my neighbours have bought little square fans you fill with water and place by the bed. They swear they are good https://hyperstech.com/intl_2/order.php?prod=coolair&net=1379&sid=7dyp1jgo41p1 and cost around 80€?

I have lived in very hot, humid climates and so hate cold weather. I moved here for the summer heat so not complaining after arriving back to weeks of unseasonable wet miserable weather. Different if you have to work but for me a shady spot in the garden and catching up on all the books not had a chance to read is my plan until we go off again in October.

Oh, I have seen these on the net and looked into them and they are definitely not what I want. I spent decades living in Queensland, but I have really never coped well with humid heat, which is what we have here, and I really don't like air conditioning in the home for lots of reasons but mainly personal comfort. However this little unit might be really good for Soleil Couchant.

Have decided to go for what Bev has because it is multi-function so will save me laying out on 2 other items that I also need (will be very handy in my bathroom during the winter, as well as providing occasional heating when our collective central heating is not turned on°.

I've been seeing ads for those little water-based coolers all over the Internet lately. As far as I can tell, they are the latest version of what some folks call a "swamp cooler." If you look up the term on the Internet you'll find any number of ways to duplicate the effect using a conventional fan and a pan or bucket of water. Given that an air conditioner extracts humidity from the air, I suspect the results from a swamp cooler might be disappointing if you're in an area with humid heat - but if anyone decides to try one of these new ones, do let us know.
Cheers,
Bev

I remember swamp coolers growing up in Texas. I'll never forget my mom turning it on that first hot spring day... a snake had taken up residence in the fan over winter. Poor guy was sliced and diced and sprayed all over the walls, not a pretty sight!

Bev's right, they're no good in hot, humid climates unless you want to grow mold. Perfect for New Mexico or Arizona.

We're in a holiday home in Burgundy near Prémery. Sunday was really hot - mid 30s, yesterday and today very pleasant. Sun with clouds and very short showers, distant thunder. Massive change from last month's stay near Cherbourg where it was very cool, very windy and very cloudy for most of the month.

Try a LARGE, iced gin and tonic dear Solly. If that doesn't work then repeat until you no longer care about the heat.

(As in all things "moderation" is for others, not us privileged, intelligent few)

Cooler here today and can do normal activities. Even went to the gym this morning (non a/c)....got a bit hot but acceptable. A young lady asked me if I was in training for something, I replied "yes, a house move with lots of heavy boxes". I don't think she considered it the right kind of "sporty" reply.
