Hello Members,

I am planning to settle in Amiens/Picardie with my wife and new born baby. We are relocating from Dubai/UAE because of my job.

Would realy appreciate feed back from those, who are either from this area or have informations, regarding this city.

1) How is Family life in this city (security)
2) Super markets, resaturants
3) Are there any IKEA outlets
4) Culture (mix or only one kind of nationality ...)
5) 2-bedroom house rents in nice area of the city (quiet & good residental area)
6) French learning school there

Hope to hear from the forum

According to their website, the closest IKEA is probably going to be the one in Henin-Beaumont, about an hour north of Amiens by car.

There is no dearth of supermarkets or restaurants in Amiens. Look for the larger chains: Carrefour, Auchan, Super U (or Hyper U), Les Mousquetaires, Cora, etc. etc. Most or all of them are available in or around Amiens.

You may also want to contact the AVF in Amiens. This is a newcomers' group. They have a French conversation group, and they may be able to give you information about French programs in the area. You can contact them through their website avfamiens - Nous contacter and while they don't have anything in English on their website, feel free to use the contact form to write them in English. Someone should get back to you with information about the association and about Amiens. (It's called "pre-accueil" in the AVF groups.)
Cheers,
Bev

Hi Aamir,
I am relocating to Amiens this summer with my family too. I am curious to know if you found any good websites to start looking for rental homes or schools.
Do you have any advice ?

Thanks,
Lewis

Hi Lewis, and welcome to the forum.

You may do better to contact a rental agency on arrival and look for a home in person. While websites can give you an idea of the going prices for property, the pictures can be deceiving. French rental laws and customs may come into play here, too.

Are you looking for private schools or are you planning on putting your kids into the public schools? In any event, there is a very good book on schools in France (with information about English language schools, both public and private) put out by the AAWE : AAWE Publications Most associations here in France close down for July and August, so you probably should contact them asap if you're interested in the publication.

There is also a very complete description in English of the French school system on the EU website as part of the Eurybase program: Eurydice - Eurybase - Descriptions of National Education Systems and Policies | EACEA

I hope you enjoy your relocation to Amiens...My wife is French and Amiens is her home town. We are based in Dubai and go back every summer to visit family. If you still need school advice let us know, as my wife was a teacher in Amiens and we have several friends who still teachers there. Once you secure the school you could look for housing, it shouldn't be a problem.
Regards Stephen.
Did you come to Amiens

Hello
I have recently started working in the Picardie area after living in France since 2008. Did you come to Amiens for your job?

Are there any other people on this forum who are living or working in this area?

Regards

Simon Powell

Hi all! Another newbie here moving to Amiens after a year in Bordeaux. Does anyone have any advice on good websites to find an apartment?

I am also highly open to meeting other expats or participating in a language exchange. I have yet to find a good website for this so again if anyone has any recommendations, that would be great.

Thanks!
Rebecca
Your post I am responding to is over four years old. Did you move to Amiens and if so, would appreciate your feedback/advice as it is one of the places we are looking at. Thanks.
