Hi
My husband has just been sent his proposed job offer based on 457 sponsorship. Looks like they are only paying part of his air fair and nothing else. Has anyone negotiated anything better? We feel like not taking it as we were hoping for at least container shipment.

You are lucky to even get half airfare. Just remember not everyone gets the sponsorship opportunity...but in the same breath if they really need his skills they will be willing to negotiate

Most people get nothing other than a job offer so be grateful they are offering that. To get more, like shipping, flights or initial accommodation he'd have to be something special like a scientist or doctor being offered a high wage and whose specialist skills were needed.

The only thing you will get is airfare back to the UK if they decide to cancel the contract as they have to offer that under DIAC rules.

It's very case specific so I have to disagree with _Shel above regarding the need to be 'something special like a scientist or doctor' in order to get relocation perks. I have just gone through the process of trying to land a 457 and from my conversations with HR, what I've seen it totally depends on the company you're moving to. Some of them have relocation packages setup even at the lowest levels. Negotiating might help, but for many it is a policy decision. I'm getting a one way trip and 2 weeks stay for my wife and I and I'm relatively junior staff with just about average pay.
Hope this helps

Is that with an international company? I've seen many of the Aus companies, even large ones not bother. Some of the state health services will offer a small package but it's pay out and claim back, wouldn't even cover your flights if there is family to take and only available past certain grades.

_shel, yes you're right it's with an international company. I think that's a really good point, international companies probably look at this a little differently and are more sympathetic towards the pressures of an international move :)
