Congratulations!

such sense of achievement on getting the visa followed by anxieties over finally moving.... some of us are still reeling in the fact that we have finally survived the long wait...while some of us are already burning the grey cells planning the 'How, Where, When's' of moving....

come, share, ask, express - and continue the tradition of this forum...

cheers

I also had sense of achievement when I got grant but looking at the challenges ahead (job in Australia etc.), it seems we have just climbed a small mountain.....we need to climb many more big mountains.

Anyway, the positive start gave us the confidence to achieve more. We will all definitely get a big success in Australia with our skills and hard work.

Just for the information of forum members, I am flying on 30th January, 2014 from Ahmedabad to Brisbane. My first pleasant evening in Australia will be on 31st January 2014.

Let me join in as well. For the past ten days I have been burning the Internet lines applying for joba through seek and linkedin. I have also taken a local number. But havent received a single call or mail yet which is giving me sleepless nights :(. Someone above correctly said we have many mountains to climb.

I am planning in Feb/March. In the meantime i have applied to 1 or 2 vacancies from Seek. I am only testing waters right now. I plan not be very aggressive right now...just understand the process.

I have updated my profile on LinkedIn...and am contacting my existing professional network for any opportunity.

I have spent more time on internationalizing my resume and am still updating it. Making a cover letter seems to be a challenge :)

Other than that...i am trying not to fret or over do job job hunting....

Guys something about job, I have a common feedback from all of my friends in Australia. Without physical presence there, it is nearly impossible to get the job in Australia. If you are very lucky or have special skills, you may get job online but chances are negligible.

Do not dishearten if you do not receive any reply of onliine application, it does not mean that you have no opportunity there, the only reason of not getting reply is because without meeting candidate, they do not consider even him/her for candidature.

Just collect your data of placement agencies etc. there and fix an appointment with them to meet them when you are in Australia. I am sure you will definitely get an opportunity once you are there provided you have requisite skills and experience which I am sure we all have other wise 189 would have not been possible for us.

So be patient and reach Australia with positive attitude.

Hope this will help.

Hi All 189 Visa holder Club Members,

I have booked my tickets for the Ahmedabad to Melbourne on the 21-Feb-2014. I (and my friends) still not believe the price I have paid for my one way ticket.
I advice those all 189 visa holder to do planning well in advance and avail a big big discount on your air fare like me and Mayank did.

Just a small tip while looking for the flights, the rates are less on working days then on weekend.

Till the time ..... Enjoy your stay in India.
Enjoy the things and dishes what ever you like the most because we are going to miss that all badly there :D

May I ask how much you had paid for the airfare? I did look for tickets for mid Jan, and prices from Chennai to Melbourne were at around Rs 35-38k. When I looked for in Oct-Nov, it was quoting a little cheaper at Rs 32-33k.

so...to update you guys...i have internationalized my CV and made a cover letter. LinkedIn has some really good tips to do this...Also, have applied to a couple of places through seek and other websites....

Im open to suggestions about what should be doing right now...

#20 ·
Hey

Thats great. I am working on my CV and cover letter too. Can you post the link to those threads on LinkedIn, if you don't mind.

Also, have you mentioned in your cover letter about your current location and when you are planning to move?

Are you guys making your resume or getting it done thru a resume writer?

I have a friend in HR there in Canberra and she says that the Resume shud be in Australian Format. Its a Mandate. And then its better to get it done thru a resume writer.

Let me know your suggestions :)

#28 ·
So far i'v worked on the resume myself....can you get the format of the resume from your friend and couple of resume writer's names?

Hi All,

I had recently done my initial entry and stayed in sydney for a week. During my stay I applied for TFN, Medicare and opened a bank account as I had my brother staying there for adddress. I am planning to fully migrate in a years time. Will it be a problem for me to have TFN and medicare without fully migrating?

Also what is the status change in VEVO after initial entry?

Regards,
Man51

Thanks for the valuable inputs on creation of resume (and a cover letter) as per Australian Market standards. Does any one know how much professional resume writer charger for single resume writing in AU ?

Thanku so much Srikar, now i have much clarity. I will travel alone and do port of entry. But can you answer some of my questions below ::

1. Is there any minimum duration to stay in Australia for Port of Entry ??

2. When we reach Australian Airport, what do we have to do actually. I mean do we have to visit any office. Is there anything done to our passport when we cum for port of entry? How will be know that our PR is validated?

3. Can you suggest any city to travel to for Port of entry. I am planning to cum and move by next flight after a gap of some 8-10 hrs, after doing some shopping at Airport :p

4. Do i need following while doing just port of entry ::

4.1 TFN
4.2 Opening of Bank Account
4.3 Registration in Medicare
4.4 Registration In centrelink

5. If my husband cant travel with me without a valid parnter VISA, Will my parents be able to travel with me without any VISA??

6. Do i have to do anything in VEVO, registration etc or its a portal just to check VISA status.

7. Whats the cost and duration of processing of a permanent Partner VISA.

Waiting for your answers :D

Thanks,
Mandeep

Please see my answers below:

1. Is there any minimum duration to stay in Australia for Port of Entry ??

No ,In fact you can just get your passport stamped at the immigration and catch the return flight with out even stepping out of the airport.

2. When we reach Australian Airport, what do we have to do actually. I mean do we have to visit any office. Is there anything done to our passport when we cum for port of entry? How will be know that our PR is validated?

Every thing is linked with your passport, when they swipe your passport or I will say before you travel itself they know your passport number and they are well informed that you have a valid visa,I think they dont even allow you to board the flight if you dont have Visa.

3. Can you suggest any city to travel to for Port of entry. I am planning to cum and move by next flight after a gap of some 8-10 hrs, after doing some shopping at Airport :p

I had not been there to Aus,so do not kow much about the cities. And Why do you waste such money only for shopping and flying?
Just spend a couple of days,I would suggest a week and do some sight seeing, book a hotel/youth hostels or some cheap accommodation for a week.search airbnb.com etc.. you will get it around 50$ per day.

4. Do i need following while doing just port of entry ::

4.1 TFN
4.2 Opening of Bank Account
4.3 Registration in Medicare
4.4 Registration In centrelink

No ,you can do it in your own sweet time after you get out of the airport and settle down.

5. If my husband cant travel with me without a valid parnter VISA, Will my parents be able to travel with me without any VISA??

No,Every body needs a visa, even babies who are days old, unless they are born in Australia.

6. Do i have to do anything in VEVO, registration etc or its a portal just to check VISA status.

NO Idea on this, may be some Mod/senior can answer this.

7. Whats the cost and duration of processing of a permanent Partner VISA.

Partner visa is taking around 1 to 1.5 years(YES YEARS not Months).Once You apply for this partner visa he can stay with you in Australia till he gets his Visa granted.May be confusing to you please check immi.gov.au on partner visa it is clearly explained.

Hope this helps.
All the best with your move.

Any one of you is moving to Sydney?

I am so perplexed. I don't know which city to move first. I don't have any body in Australia and I am very sure we are going to Sydney because of Job opportunities.

I am trying to book in stay for initial days and then will look for an accommodation.

Let me know if I can we can get company, it will be easy you see.
