Khon Kaen City Guide

movingtothailandIMAGE200Khon Kaen is a city that is a remarkable study in contrasts. You are just as likely to run into a water buffalo in the streets as you would a high priced luxury car. The city’s residents are equally diverse, with young urban professionals dressed in the height of corporate fashion walking through the city’s main thoroughfares or sitting in the many marketplace food establishments elbow to elbow with Buddhist monks clad in their distinctive saffron-tinged robes. The city has flourished to become the regional center for education, financial institutions, government offices and transportation.

Along with Songkhla, Chiang Mai, Chonburi and Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen is considered one of the major cities in Thailand, as determined by the country’s National Economic and Social Plan. The city is particularly well known for its role as the center of the region’s profitable silk trade.

Residential Places in Khon Kaen

Real estate in Khon Kaen is a remarkably good investment, with great potential for profit in the event that you decide to sell in the future. You also stand to earn a great deal from rental income if you ever decide to lease out your property as real estate is always in great demand in the city. Even if you do not intend to sell or rent out your house, buying real estate in the city is a good idea given its proximity to many commercial and business establishments and the excellent quality of living.

To give you an idea of the prices that you can expect to pay near the Khon Kaen city center, a recent estimate for a one rai (a rai is equivalent to 1,600 square meters) piece of land located near the Charoen Thani Hotel placed the value between 12 and 20 million Baht.

If you are looking for an apartment to stay in for the long term and you could do with a little more space, you might consider purchasing a house instead. Measured by the square meter, a house will come out costing about as much as a one-room apartment in the center of the city.

If, on the other hand, you do not intend to stay for very long in the city, an apartment with all the amenities included–cable TV, high speed internet, refrigerator, king-sized bed and air-conditioning–will set you back around 4,500 Baht per month.

Hospitals and Universities of Khon Kaen

Thailand has recently become well known all over the world as a prime destination for medical tourism. The fields of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in particular are areas wherein the country has distinguished itself over other popular medical tourism destinations in Asia. Khon Kaen upholds this medical reputation rather well with a host of excellent hospitals and various other medical care facilities.

Their doctors are also among the best in the region, many of them having been educated in the world’s foremost universities. For this reason, you would have no trouble finding a doctor who speaks English fluently in any of the major Khon Kaen hospitals. Among the best hospitals in the city are the Khon Kaen Ram Hospital, Sri Nagarind Hospital, which is the medical arm of Khon Kaen University, Jitavej Hospital, and Rachapruk Hospital.

Khon Kaen is home to one of the most respected learning institutions in the country–and indeed in the rest of Asia–Khon Kaen University. The university offers degrees in a wide variety of disciplines, among them engineering, medicine, architecture, law, and fine arts.

Commercial Places in Khon Kaen

Of course it goes without saying that excellent Thai restaurants can be found all over Khon Kaen. Khon Kaen is not just about Thai food. You can also find many other types of restaurants in the city offering a wealth of different cuisines from around the world. Some of the more popular Chinese restaurants are the Bua Luang Restaurant, Charoen Thani Chinese Restaurant, Cookmun Chinese Restaurant and Jeng Chinese Restaurant.

There are also quite a few restaurants that specialize in western cuisine, among them the 23 Steakhouse at Prachasumran Road, Wooden Swing at Klangmuang Road, and the Kronen Brauhaus at the Hotel Sofitel.
