Latest data suggests a jobs boom in New Zealand, particularly in Auckland

More jobs are now being advertised in New Zealand in professions such as IT and communications technology, which often attract applications from overseas.

Job prospects are particularly strong in Auckland and Wellington, but Canterbury has fewer jobs advertised than a year ago.

In Auckland there was a 19.2% rise in new job advertisements on employment site SEEK in February compared to a year ago let by technology and IT and then trades and services.

Janet Faulding, general manager for SEEK New Zealand, said there has been a solid uplift in jobs available across the country will Wellington also experiencing a strong market with an annual rise of 11.8%.

The most sought after ICT professionals in Auckland are currently developers and programmers, IT business system analysts, help desk and IT support professionals, developers, programmers and project managers.

‘February was a great month to be jobseeker in New Zealand because there was strong year on year job advert growth across several large employing industries on SEEK beyond ICT,’ Faulding pointed out.

Outside of IT the biggest rises have been in manufacturing, transport and logistics with job adverts up 26% year on year, health and medical up 23% year on year, trades and services up 18% and construction up 12%.

‘The large industries hiring now reflect what we’re seeing in our economy, which is population growth putting pressure on our services and infrastructure. This is driving demand across construction, trades and services and healthcare, which are all at the front line of servicing our growing population,’ Faulding explained.

But the jobs market in Canterbury is not so strong with adverts down 2.6%. Faulding said it was a hirer’s market in Canterbury compared to the same period last year. For each job advertised there was a higher than average number of candidates applying, creating more competition for job seekers but providing hirers with a larger pool of candidates to choose from.

There is also demand nationally for in the human resources and recruitment industries, up 32% year on year with generalists most in demand. ‘This could indicate that hirers are looking for multi-skilled practitioners to take part in the full spectrum of HR activities across a business, including recruitment, employee relations issues, coaching, leadership development and change management,’ revealed Faulding.

The greatest number of job opportunities HR and recruitment professionals were in Auckland with adverts up 39% year on year in this sector, followed by a rise of 12% in Wellington but a fall of 14% in Canterbury.
