Question New SSN Issuance

I entered the US (via EWR) on March 14th (just before the COVID-19 lockdowns started) as an LPR. As part of that application I requested that a social security number was issued and told it would arrive within three weeks of landing. Roll on three months, I have the physical green card, but still no social security number... Called the local SSA office and they said it will require an in-person appointment. Does anyone know of any other way to resolve this before the SSA offices open again? Turns out getting _anything_ done without an SSN is basically impossible...

If a call to SSA indicates that an application for an SSN has not been received, then I fear that the only option is to front up to an office once they open the same way anyone arriving on another visa with a right to work would have to.

Its possible that the paperwork is stuck somewhere in an in-tray somewhere unopened but alas I don't think there is a way to "un-stuck" it until things start to open up.
