Default International movers US to France

Hi,

I'm getting ready to move back to France after 4 years here in the US. I'm trying to find a good international mover but am overwhelmed by the different options. The few quotes I have done range from $2500 to $8900 - for 10m3 mostly boxes and a few furnitures.

I have few questions that I was hoping other experienced expatriates might answer:

- What to look for in a quote?
- Can you pack yourself for an international move?
Most movers want to pack "because of custom clearance" but a few seemed okay for me to pack myself
- Any recommendations of movers for US (DC) to France?

Moving companies that are part of a national chain (like Bekins, United, Mayflower) will have ties to companies that do international moves. It sounds as if you have already contacted a few movers to get the relevant quotes, but often that is the only way to find a service that will work for you.

The issue of whether or not you can (or should) pack your own boxes comes down to insurance. If the mover has packed your stuff, they can then be held responsible for any damage in transit. If you pack it yourself, the insurance may not cover any damage to the goods. There is also the matter of customs clearance, where the customs officials can (and sometimes do) ask to see specific items listed in the inventory of goods being shipped. You'll need to prepare an itemized list of what you are shipping in any event, usually listing the items, original cost, date of purchase, current value - all can be estimated though any items less than a year old you should have invoices or receipts for.

And one other little detail you may or may not be aware of. In the US, most movers charge based on weight rather than volume. Not sure how they convert this for use by the moving company on the receiving end of things, but that seems to be how it's done.

Thank you, this is very helpful a usual.

It looks like I'll have to go with an option "partial" packing.

I didn't know about the weight vs volume. The moving companies that have replied to me all quoted for a volume, so it seems fine.

Thanks,
