Default Does foreign debt follow you to other countries?

I am in the process of applying to a new job back in the US (my home country). I previously worked in France for a year and had a French bank account while living there. I forgot to close my account when I left, but the balance was zero. Due to annual fees, my balance has apparently gone in the red and now the bank is trying to send a collection agency after me. I am trying to resolve this with the bank, but I don't want it to affect my chances of employment here in the states. Does anyone know if company background checks reveal foreign debts?

Generally speaking, no. Your foreign debts or banking information usually aren't part of your US credit rating - and from everything I have heard, more and more employers start a background check with your credit report/history.

But, depending on the employer, there could be some variations concerning the exact nature of information they look for in doing a background check.

Okay. The employer is just a software company so I'm hoping it doesn't affect my possible employment at the company

But I've heard stories of Belgian and Dutch collection agencies chasing people when they move (back) to the US. Hope you will be able to work things out in an acceptable way.
