Default a tax question for ex US employee

bit early to be thinking about this maybe but I have a tax return question.

so, having lived in the US and been paid by a US company since August 2013, I have filed taxes right up to January this year (2018 tax year).

I left the US last July and will be returning in October. However, visa processing means that even though I'll be in the US, I will be getting paid by the UK company into my UK bank account. Of course I'll be using my US bank account to pay bills etc and will transfer money form the UK myself.

As a result of that, my US earnings for 2019 will be zero.

Do I still have to file a tax return for 2019, simply showing zero earnings? and doesn't that look a bit suspicious and ripe for an audit?

If you are working while in the US from October onward, then you are "working in" the US no matter who is paying you, nor where you are being paid. So your US earnings for 2019 probably aren't going to be zero.

There is a fairly elaborate test for determining your residence status when you have been resident in the US in the couple of years prior. https://www.irs.gov/individuals/inte...-presence-test for details
