Default Hello

Hello.

Having read several hundred threads, I've finally taken the plunge and joined this very interesting forum.

I lived in the UK through my A levels, lived in the US for about 16 years, and have been living in Ukraine for the past 10. My dad is American (he was stationed in England for my childhood), and my mum is English.

I have a Ukrainian wife (been together 8 years), a son from a former marriage (to a Ukrainian I met in the US and who lives here), and a one-and-a half year old daughter.

My son will be graduating in about three years. The only thing holding us here is him. When he graduates, he will be off to university in Europe, so my wife and I are planing our escape.

I am currently getting my British passport (because of my mum) to expand our options.

It's been easy to make money here, and the taxes are basically non existent, but it is not a country we want our daughter to grow up in. Warmer climates are what draws us, so Spain has been put on the list.

We are planning to spend two months in Spain in May/June this year. We also want to spend time in the winter season (maybe next December/January), especially after reading the tales of woe regarding the heating situation.

Anyway, Happy New Year's, and I'll be asking questions. I'm also happy to answer any.

Hi and welcome to the forum! Folk will be along to answer as many questions as they can and you should have a read of the FAQ thread as it has a lot of info on the practicalities of a move to Spain for you and your wife.

It's a good idea to have a few visits to different areas especially during winter. Climate varies a lot in different areas of Spain depending on altitude and location.

One thing to note is that you will find it a lot harder to make money, especially if you are not fluent in Spanish, as unemployment is very, very high though the situation may improve a little in a few years time. You'll not find taxes non existent either! Check these things out carefully as you progress your research.

Thank you for your welcome.

We've done well in Ukraine, so having work is not necessary financially, but I'm too "young" (mid 40s) to retire. I also know that working is one of the best ways for integrating into a new culture.

I currently have an English school in Ukraine focusing on training students to escape to European universities, but there is also a sizable component to the business of Skype lessons with rich Muscovites (as I have a PhD in English and am a native speaker, and because of several years of word of mouth, they line up to pay through the nose). It would be easy for me to set up a Cypriot corporation through family and get paid a salary.

We also have significant savings that are getting obscene interest rates, and, with the current lot in power for the foreseeable future, interest rates in Ukraine will be high for a long time.

So, although not rich, money isn't the prime factor for working. I'm too self aware to think that I'll be forever content doing laps in the pool between Skyping Igor and Nastya and Vlad and Sveta (etc).

Thanks again for the welcome, and Happy New Year.
