Default Which neighborhoods to live near beach in Barcelona?

Hi, all. I'm in Barcelona scouting for a house or apartment in which to retire. As I slowly make my way through the neighborhoods I begin to get a better idea of what I'm looking for. I'd like to live on a street/in a neighborhood as pretty and charming as Gracia, but as close to the beach as la Barceloneta. I prefer to remain closer to the center of the city - which I understand to be El Gotic, more or less - so that Vila Olympica probably not in the cards. Though I would have found Raval's roughness very attractive (and more affordable) when I was younger, I think that I now want to live in a neighborhood as charming as Gracia.

I thought that la Barceloneta would be the perfect solution - near the beach, an attractively old culture, and so on. But none of my brief rambles through the neighborhood have revealed a sub-neighborhood or set of streets with Gracia's, well, grace. In fact I was a little surprised at how slightly run-down and colorless most of the streets seem to be. (Apologies in advance if I simply haven't found the really nice streets of Barceloneta. Please Help Me Find Them.)

Now I know that, despite some pleasant and determined rambles through town, I still haven't seen enough of the city to make a truly informed decision about where to buy.

So, to reduce all this to a single, coherent question: Can anyone recommend particular streets or plazas within, say, a quarter of a mile from la Barceloneta beach where the walls are relatively free of graffiti, and the buildings are old but obviously well-kept and striking? In other words, can I find Gracia in or near Barceloneta? Though of course it is, can we even pretend for a moment of fantasy that price is no impediment?

(I just have to say to anyone who'll listen: For all that one gets warned about the crowds and pickpockets, I LOVE la Barceloneta's beach. I think I'm going to miss that the most when I leave. It's the vista, the water, and the people all at once. Please help me find a place to live near there.)
