Default Visitor Visa Extension

Hi,

My partner and I want to spend 6 months in Canada (my home) and 6 months in South Africa. There are a lot of hoops to jump through on the SA side!

Is it possible to extend a three month visitors visa once you are there in South Africa? If I applied for an extension right away when I arrived, would that work? We have not been together for the required two years yet.

Thanks,
Fiona

Sorry - I should have said, we have not been together for the required two years to be considered common-law.

Default Visitor/Retired Visa

Is it possible to apply for the retired persons visa once in SA? I would arrive with all the required paperwork. To apply from Canada, I would have to go to the SA Consular General's office in Toronto, which is the other side of the country from Vancouver where I live. Internal flights are very expensive here, plus the cost of accommodation etc.

I have just received word from the SA Consular General's office in Toronto saying that I cannot change status from one visa to another while in South Africa. Is this what other people have experienced?

I'm not an expert, but someone had similar situation before. Just tell from my own experience:

1. You cannot change the visitor's visa once you are in South Africa;

2. What the embassy recommended to us:
1) Apply for a regular visitor's visa (in your case, it is exempted because of your being a Canadian citizen). You can stay in South Africa for 90 days tops;
2)Find a DHA office and get your civil union partnership solemnized. However, both of you need to provide documents to prove you are single at the moment;
3) Then go back to Canada and apply for a long-term visitor's visa to accompany your partner in South Africa (usually 3 year-period, then you can renew it in Canada or South Africa);
4) After five years, you can apply for permanent residency.

Hope this can solve your problem.
