The trick is to know where you're going yourself. Ask them if they know it, offer landmarks and offer to direct them the way. By magic a lot of the drivers suddenly know where they are going.
It must be so humiliating to be told directions by a woman...

Some will try to take you around in circles and the longer way if they think you're a tourist.
An sadly some seem to be fresh off the boat and have no clue whatsoever... And the worst of all, the illiterate ones unable to read any signs!

Google maps is not that up to date. Here are some alternative maps that can be helpful.
Wikimapia - Let's describe the whole world!
Мap of Dubai. Sharjah. Ajman: streets, buildings and companies of the city — 2GIS

The pre-ordered white&black RTA taxis seems to be a bit more clued in.
Careem and Uber have GPS and they know how to use it.

The only relevant piece of advice needed. If you don't know this, you're on a hiding to nowhere.

So rang the number and was told 2-3 days before someone calls me back to discuss the request - I pointed out I didn't want to 'discuss' anything, and to cancel the line. The guy took the details and I still have to wait 2-3 days for someone to call me back.

So much for automated systems and the desire for the UAE to do even more of its business online ....
Reminds me of the time I had to provide proof of my birth year not being in the year '71' , yes that's the year '71', this was after informing me after a week or so why the account could not be opened because of this.

You get the same look as a dog being shown a card trick when asking why..

I ended up paying AED 100 to convert my mobile line from post-paid to pre-paid... which they screwed up ultimately leaving me with no phone line at all. Glad to be out of here.

I was under the impression that locals get preferential rates?

I've been pondering on going from pre-pay to post-paid, purely for the convenience of having internet for various apps. Is it worth it or will it be too difficult to change over, keeping my number?
Is the Etisalat 150 AED a month with 5 GB a decent offer? I don't need a new phone.

Only you can decide what is a good deal and that depends upon your usage pattern. Personally I have PAYG and put 100AED on it for 1Gb data each month and then maybe 50AED every six months for calls

I can't honestly imagine using 5Gb or the 1,000 minutes of calls each month. One third of the day I am asleep, one third I am in the office or home in wifi. I know a lot of our hosts seem to be never off the phone but that's an awful lot of chin wagging every day.

My wife gets by on 20AED a month.

It's not saving much but the less people who pay the monthly fees, the more likely they are to drop contract prices as they have already increased what you get, to unusable levels so offering 10Gb instead of 5Gb is pointless if you only use 100Mb each month.
