Default Things I am learning on the way

Was looking to put a post up for Americans moving down under to share info about shipping containers, cheap flights, any animal airline/ quarantine concerns, and the like. Looking to connect with others and share some links.

This is what I have so far:

interesting links page on the site below. A little dated:

Australian American Association of Brisbane

great blog by an American woman in Sydney:

The Yellow Brick Road: So You're Thinking of Moving to Australia . . .

another blog:

https://housewifedownunder.wordpress.com/page/10/

check out this blog: watch the baby roo video first!

An American in Australia

how to get US foods and MEXICAN FOOD:

Mexican Ingredients

(A simple google search for mexican food in Australia turns up 3-4 sites that will mail you stuff.)

couple of good expat forum links I didn't want to lose:

slang!:

I know it is about nurses, but check out the perspective:

USA RN to Melbourne!!! - pg.3 | allnurses
of particular note is this quote:

I also think that many people think, on some level, that being unequal with a dominant culture doesn't count as being -ist, whether that dominance is religious, cultural, racial/ethnic or gendered. So Christians, Americans, whites and men are seen as fairer game than minorities. That's difficult if you happen to be a member of any (or all) of these groups.

so, they may mess with you more, but dont take it personally....

more cultural perspectives, great site:

couple of other things I have found:

Is this a valid option for an Australian residential address prior to arrival? not sure, but I will try this out. I could mail myself stuff and most importantly have a residential address. Just cant check it unitl arrival unless a fortune is paid for forwarding:

another thread on similar, which I havent explored thoroughly yet: Australian mailing address options?

another one here: looks cheap and address could maybe pass for a real mailing address? https://www.travellers.com.au/plan-y...lding-service/

international phone number options:

Default banks

these can be opened from overseas. I plan to wait to be a little more clear on where we are going, and do a simple google search to see who has the most branches in our area before opening one.

ANZ: Moving to Australia

as far as getting best exchange rate- who knows. Looking at services such as:

The key point in not getting screwed on exchange rates- so far I dont know!

Default moving companies

Guy just left from North American Van Lines, will have an estimate in a few days, but he was very knowledgeable. They use in house packers, not a subcontractor. I have heard horror stories about subcontractors. Everything also must be labeled appropriately for an international move (you cant just write "miscellaneous" on a box.)

For international moves, professional packers are required. Cost for this part (packing and loading) is based on weight.

Despite the size of our family and house, we are going for only a 20 foot container (leaving a lot behind, mostly focusing on bedrooms, kitchen stuff, and a futon), so hopefully that will help pricing. Shipping costs (the actual transport) is based on container size.

Reputable companies will send an estimator. Insurance is actually optional. The estimate will include door-to door service, only thing not included should be Australian customs fees (hopefully just a couple hundred dollars).

Will see..

I have another estimate, online only that quoted me a 40 foot container and the cost was right around $10,000 US from door to door (Maryland to Northern NSW)

As a follow up, I have gone with Westpac (opening online was easy, and the customer service so far excellent. I also opened an ANZ account, but could not get online access established. A representative from the UK said he tried to call to help, but I never got it. He also never responded to emails.

I have transferred money with a service called transferwise, easy to set up, and no problems at all so far. I feel I got a great rate!

Camping Tips and Hints
Well, carpenterrn, this is just a great thread mate! Precious info, great resources.
Speaking of camping, Id like to add just a few websites to the list, since Im a camping fan myself. Here are a couple of AU government sites that can be useful:
https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au...-accommodation
https://parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au/campgrounds-status
https://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/experiences/camping/
Parks Victoria - Camping
https://www.environment.sa.gov.au/parks/Home
https://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=412

Good camping starts with good planning, so finding a great caravan manufacturer in Australia is important as well. You want your camping adventure to be perfect, so make sure you do your research and prep well.
If anyone needs more tips about camping in AU, I'd be more than happy to share.
