Default Paper Booklet Indian Driving License to Smart Card from within Australia

Hi Guys,

Seeking your help as I need to convert my Paper Booklet Indian Driving License to Smart Card from within Australia. The 2 websites I tried Driving License Details Search and https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/ are not able to locate my driving license number (Originally issued by Mumbai RTO) in 2005.

I'm wondering what can be done, as I'll don't think I can get the booklet license verified in VFS.

Any other services that are available to convert to smart card license? Should i send the license to India and ask a family member to visit RTO and get it converted?

Thanks.

You are no longer required to get your Indian driving license verified through VFS in VIC

You can approach them directly for conversion.
They will get the verification done directly from IHC on their own if required

Whether the paper based license would be acceptable or not, no idea, but you should give it a try

Moreover, to issue a smart card driving license, you need to be physically present in the RTO as your finger prints and photos are taken electronically
So getting it converted in Mumbai is ruled out in your absence

Cheers

In Victoria, from experience -
- You need to get a letter from mumbai RTO stating the authenticity of the license.
- This letter to be taken to VFS Australia who will provide IDLV based on RTO letter.
- IDLV provided by VFS along with paper license to be submitted to Vicroads for verification.

Thanks newbienz and agnel25 for your responses.

I researched more on your responses and found the below article from SBS which provides more details on the new procedure.
https://www.sbs.com.au/yourlanguage/...river-licences

I guess the next steps for me would be to approach VicRoads with my paper booklet license and get them to verify.

Appreciate your help on this matter

There is no way your paper booklet license will be verified by Vicroads. Vicroads now does over the counter verification i.e. on the spot verification. Only license with chip (smart cards) gets verified, everything else gets rejected. My wife had a license issued in 2008 ( a regular card without a chip). It couldn't be verified. Getting a letter from VFS doesnt help either.

My suggestion would be to get a L-license. Give your drive test and get a green P-license. Use it until you go to India. Get your license renewed in India. Come back and reapply for verification. You get a full license.

Thanks for your help.

If I follow this procedure, to get a P-license, get the Indian license in smart card and then reapply for verification, will there be another driving test? or will VicRoads convert my P-license to a full license on verification?

We had the same doubt. Vicroads told us another drive wouldnt be necessary. They will verify and issue a full license. Better give them a call and reconfirm.

Hi Mate,

Was your issue resolved around paper license? I've recently moved to Victoria and have same issue.

Thanks,
