You will get a better response if you post the question in the Life in Australia section of the forum

Also you will have to be more specific as the living costs between Sydney and Melbourne and other small cities would not be the same

Cheers

Expenses are same in most the city when it comes to food and other utilities. You will find differences in house rent.

1 person may range from 750 to 1000 AUD living a decent life in any city except rent

In Sydney you may not get a decent house / flat for less than 2500 AUD where in Melbourne you will get same in 1500 AUD.

I was in Melbourne two years back and was living a decent life in 2500 AUD having 1 Bedroom flat in city. We were two members.

If you are going to use public transport go through this www.opal.com.au , they tell they wont charge more than $15 per day and $60 per week. If you are going to use car, petrol is $1.5 per litre.
To understand food prices go to any online supermarket, for example www.coles.com.au and see prices for your usual items.
Rent will vary a lot - if you are ready to live in shared accomodation or separate apartment and area of course.
Same with utilities

Use www.numbeo.com to find the cost of living comparison between cities. It has pretty detailed break-up of household expenses in all the major cities in Australia.
