It does appear that you get these situations from time to time. There's a lot of fuss and even more hot air expended, and nothing changes. From my comparatively short working experience in the US there are some really deep seated, ingrained racial issues that need big solutions, not soothing words.

It seems that Trump is part of the problem and not part of the solution.

In the long view of things, President Bonespurs' main role in all the demonstrations and riots going on in the US just now is mostly that of the guy pouring gasoline on the flames. The actual sources of the problems go back for decades - actually for a couple centuries or more.

There is also a nasty form of institutional racism in many (if not "most") police forces in too many US cities (and many towns) that glorifies a certain type of violent and aggressive policing. It's not unlike the charges of overly-aggressive police action in the banlieux north of Paris - but on a wider scale and more regular reports of deaths, mainly of Black people. In some ways, the US has never really gotten over the Civil War.

For a while I used to think, "what has that country back there become in these last 20 or 30 years that all these horrible things are going on there?" but if I'm honest with myself, this has been going on for a long time. The ugly attitudes and behaviors have always been around but weren't particularly visible in many parts of the country. It's only now that we have the cell phone cameras and videos that can document incidents. And, of course, it doesn't help one bit that the current president seems to enjoy egging this kind of behavior on to draw attention away from all his own failings on other issues.

I might just suggest out to those that are quick to point out that Americans can't be bothered to get up off their couch to protest any social/political ills that this is evidence to the contrary. Yes,yes, Don needs dressing down (and we do now have a glimmer of hope he may be unseated in November) but I would hope this would serve to illustrate that in fact, not all of America is morally bankrupt.

RIP George Floyd and sincerest condolences to his family and friends. May justice be truly served. Though that will not in itself fix things - the US needs to take significant steps to the address the problems faced by such a huge proportion of its black population (and indeed, American Indians and others).

A lot of these were peaceful organized protests during the day that devolved into something else when the sun went down and shadier elements decided to take advantage of the situation.

it does feel like everything is collapsing around us lately though.

It's Brixton and Toxteth all over again.

Cops with no respect for people that look different from them.

Rioting is not a form of protest, it's just misplaced anger. By rioting instead of protesting in a civil manner the folks involved will scare old white voters in the US so much that it'll get Trump re-elected.

This is likely already out of date in terms of charges against police officers, but may help inform you.
