Isn't that the same article I posted a link to yesterday in the Brexit thread?

What's to think? Govey is lashing out because the European Commission has started an action against the UK for infringing EU citizens' rights since 2014. The EC is probably correct that the UK law has been contravening EU regs - apparently Theresa May was made aware last year and promised to amend UK law but she never did. Govey is saying n'importe quoi in the usual Tory manner - doesn't matter if there's any truth in it. I don't think he mentions any specific facts about any specific countries does he? He hasn't a clue what's happening to UK citizens in the UK and he cares less. The objective is to get headlines in the UK about the EU being untrustworthy, and divert attention from what the UK's been doing wrong.

Typical UK govt 'negotiating' strategy when things aren't going as they want. Gove has probably taken offence at being called out on something so thought he'd lob a red herring into the fray with a letter outlining UK initiatives in this regard and in essence demanding that all EU27 states do likewise.

That is not to say that there aren't Brits legally living in the EU who are vulnerable and having problems - and of course vice versa.

Frankly, 'rights' of say French citizens and others living in France have also been compromised since Covid-19, but Gove thinks that the Brexit saga should take priority over a major public health crisis. IMO France has far more urgent stuff to deal with right now, not the least of which being the state of hospitals and EHPADs and all the related issues.

The EU has proposed an extension to negotiations in light of the virus, the UK doesn't want one.

Not the same article, this one is from the Guardian, but it is the same issue. This article mentions many EU countries, including France and Spain.

*should say EU, doh.

As I recall: the UK doesn't issue a residence card and EU citizens were very concerned that they were applying via an app and had no evidence of their status. At the EU's insistence, the UK now makes it possible for them to print some kind of receipt from the app. And many applicants are having trouble with the app.
My instinctive reaction is that it's the dirty pot trying to smear grease over the far cleaner kettle so as to call it black.
