Default Polanski

"The entire board of the Cesar Awards, France's Oscars equivalent, has resigned en masse after weeks of controversy over Roman Polanski's new film which received the most nominations"

https://news.sky.com/story/polanski-...wards-11933585

How was this man (who admitted rape of a 13 year old girl in the USA) never imprisoned and secondly, allowed to make a film again.

Polanski....is the debate of the day.

Not an awful lot about this story in French news

Why not ?

It is a French debate...on a French forum. Or even an American/France debate.

Most here are American.

You must have some views.

Be my guest..start a thread called 'Gabriel Matzneff' or 'Klaus Barbie' if you want.

But this thread is about 'Polanski'.

Nah, it is more complicated than that - it is Dominic Cummings who is running the country and calling the shots.

Actually, France has a long standing reputation for never extraditing a citizen, no matter the charge. A few years ago (actually, quite a few years ago) there was some guy who had been suspected of killing his girlfriend in the US who fled to Sweden or somewhere like that. He turned up (with his new Swedish wife) in France about the same time as someone found the remains of the old girlfriend in the wall of some house they had been living in 20 years earlier. But France would not extradite him for trial.

I used that example several times when visiting back in the States, if someone threatened me with "oh, that's illegal here." (Mostly, IIRC, the car rental agencies that insisted that I had to declare every scratch and ding on a rental car before I took it off the lot - otherwise I'd be charged for "damages" on return of the car.)

Sometimes you have to look on the positive side of these little "quirks" of the French State.

Oh, much more interesting are the "recent developments" that caused Benjamin Griveaux to "suddenly" withdraw his candidacy for mayor of Paris. Hm, does this put Cyril the math genius back in the game?

That convention continues and has been stressed several times by the media, the Justice Minister etc. lately. Sometimes you really have to wonder if it is a good thing. Then again, there was a Frenchman who murdered his new wife in Australia maybe 10 years ago; Australia couldn't find sufficient evidence to convict him and he returned (perhaps was returned) to France and France subsequently investigated, did a far better job than Australia, and he was convicted.

If Carlos Ghosn were to be returned to France, he would not be extradited to Japan or anywhere else, as he has French nationality, but he would be investigated for potential crimes in France.

I find it all pretty weird, given you can have a self-confessed child rapist or could have a mass murderer walking around free in France and even receiving awards.

I think it's a very good thing that the César directors all resigned - it was intentional with a view to 'cleaning up their act' as it were, and their reputation, when it comes to who can be nominated for and receive awards.

For Smeg's info, I saw the story in the French media multiple times yesterday.

Oh, and I have significant issues with Woody Allen, too. That's the US for you, and look how long it took to react to Weinstein, even though the industry was fully aware.

But it's not just France and not just the US.
