Just finished baking the galette.
Sad, the little ones have gone home - there's no one to sit under the table and call out the names when we cut it...

Are 'the little ones' grandchildren?

Anyway, I'm sure you will enjoy it and well done for baking it yourself

Yes, the little ones are our grandchildren, they stayed with us most of the holidays, but had to be back home (north of Paris) for school today. Does "the little ones" sound odd? My English has been getting pretty rusty since I retired.

As for the galette, don't tell anyone but I cheated with the pastry!

Oh, little ones doesn't sound odd, I just wasn't sure. (My English is getting pretty rusty too, but I only use it on this forum, FB and Messenger - doesn't take long to lose it, but it comes back quickly when you start speaking it again.)

I would have cheated with the pastry, too.

Every year the French President in office receives the gift of several galettes des rois from the federation of French bakers.

However, they never contain a bean because it wouldn't do for the president of the French Republic to be named king and wear the crown.....
