Here's an article in the NY Times that describes "democracy grief", from which we are all suffering: Democracy Grief Is Real https://nyti.ms/2LRLcSL

So Cheeto has been impeached, and not a single Republican dared to vote for it. (Justin Amash left the party and is listed as an Independent.) Tulsi Gabbard hasn't done herself any favaours by simply saying she was "present". I suppose this was to get back at HRC for saying she was being duped by the Russians, but honestly, if you can't take a stand on the Obstruction of Congress charge, are you really "present" in Congress?

It should be a momentous decision and day (well, night actually...) yet it just feels like another news day.

Interesting developments, though. It seems that Pelosi isn't going to submit the impeachment to the Senate until and unless she determines that the trial rules will offer a fair trial. With McConnell saying that he's going to run the whole thing in coordination with the White House and out and out stating that he isn't an impartial juror from the get-go (thereby making a joke of the oath they are supposed to take for the trial), this could get real interesting.

John Dean has been proposing this approach - though mainly to hold impeachment over Trump's head until after the elections, and then dropping the "other shoe." But some legal expert today mentioned that either McConnell or the Supreme Court Chief Justice (who would preside over the trial in the Senate) could potentially set a deadline for submitting the impeachment to the Senate.

They say DT is expecting an acquittal in the trial, which he would insist is a "total vindication." There are some interesting possibilities in this alternative approach, I think. If nothing else, it would drive 45 around the bend like nothing else. And just leave the questions hanging throughout the election next year. Ah, may we live in "interesting" times. (or is that "the gift that keeps on giving?")

I'm getting to the point in my life where I don't want to live in interesting times...just want to maintain the status quo until and throughout my retirement...but it's pretty clear that is not what is going to happen!

I think if they can hold it for a while, as more information is developed there may be a lot more that comes out that will make it harder for the Republicans to just hold the line. Nobody but Trump is saying that Trump is innocent...the things the Republicans in Congress and Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell have been saying lately sound to me like soothing words to try to calm down a President who is about to go around the bend psychologically.

So maybe he'll completely lose it and we will be rid of him that way.

In any case, I think his psychodramas have exhausted the entire country (maybe world) at this point.

The problem I see is that holding off sending it to the Senate will be seen as a political ploy. Which is so infuriating given the completely craven abasement of the Republican party.

Which it is. But no more so than the Republicans announcing that they won't be impartial or that they are coordinating their "responsibilities" with the White House staff. Besides, this was kind of John Dean's idea in the first place. (Remember John Dean from the Nixon Watergate Trials?)

I had a morning paper route that summer. I was 14. Every day I tossed their faces on the doorsteps from 4:30-6am. I listened to the hearings on the radio. I kept a scrapbook of cuttings of the whole process. Don't know what happened to it.

I hope you are listening/watching Adam Schiff in the impeachment hearing on c-span via YouTube. He is doing a great job! Nice to see that some members of Congress can actually speak well! He just finished. If you go to cspan on YouTube, you can manually move back in time and listen to his whole presentation. Very well spoken!

I agree that it is very interesting and moving to watch Schiff present the House's case against Trump. And yes, a joy to see that someone in Congress can speak coherently in public.

But in the end, I'm afraid it's all in vain. McConnell should be impeached next for his declaration that he's working for a "prompt acquittal" (um, sort of contrary to that oath he swore and signed on Monday).

What I don't get is - where are the protests? Where are the demonstrations? (Peaceful or otherwise.) Or has everyone over there decided that posting snide memes on Facebook is "civic action" these days? Does Putin really have dirt on everyone over there?

Because we have had decades of nothing but The Three R's in schools, people haven't learned anything about citizenship. Or analytical thought. They don't know anything about government, and they ain't going to get all het up about it.

Then again, the whole Clinton fiasco really trivialized impeachment, in addition to soiling the Oval Office. The Republicans are so spineless, you wonder how they can get out of the chairs. Maybe that is why they are so lockstep -- because they don't have the vertebrae to stand on their own.

But you are right: where are the citizens demanding truth and justice? And nobody expects anything better, which really amazes me.

Or maybe it is the substances. Naw --- the people who are in the life of addiction don't have a thought for anything else and probably never did. They aren't the voters, they're the non-voters.

But, you know, it used to be we all watched the same tv shows and news, we had a shared commonality of information. Now we don't. Now people have their news tailored to their own niche, and they don't see what the other half sees.

Damned if I know.
