I can't see Trump going because of the impeachment, I am far more concerned that he will be re-elected (and I believe he will). Have to admit that I have a vested interested, given he is doing untold damage to my income through the impact on the AUD to EUR exchange rate.

Well, of course, and then you wonder why people consume more than they need to and think that non-essentials of life are essential. That said, they don't have those ads where I fill up, but it's worth noting that if your service station installs one, they will be paid for doing so. Neo-liberalism gone mad (IMHO).

Yep...our local carrefour has them. I have seen them in quite a few places.

Usually the ads are 'would you like to advertise here'.

They are completely dumb.

Usually when I fill up I spend most of my attention on not getting mugged.

For the last couple of years, every time Trump does something particularly disgusting, which is like every other day, I keep hearing American commentators saying “this is not who we are” or “this is not what America believes “.

If Trump manages to get re-elected then all I can think is “yes, it is who you are and what you have become”.

Sadly, it seems like impeachment will fail whether it passes or not : as there is such a marginal chance that 20 (!) Republican senators will vote to remove Trump from office, a vote for impeachment in the House will just engender further divisiveness, which only pads Trump's electoral prospects. While accusations of despicability and of cowardice against Republicans are wholly unjustified, one has to admire their adherence to a winning strategy : they are positioning themselves for an easy victory in 2020 by consolidating around their leader, as opposed to the Democrats who seem to be fracturing worse than the shins of a calcium-deficient cross-country runner.

As Caerus points out, Trump is definitely a part of who we are, and, at this rate, almost certainly will continue to be well into the next decade. Obviously, the vast majority of Americans are disgusted and embarrassed by Trump, but that sizable contingent can't seem to agree on the next step and thus cannot organize and thus cannot represent.

Coming back to are people going batshit crazy and if so why, I just read this, OK it's the Grauniad but I can quite believe that this is how some people form opinions, and some of it made my toes curl. It also picks up on why so often you see headlines that can't be substantiated in the article - if all people read is the headlines, they're easy prey.

A great many people do only read headlines, just as a great many people only listen to sound bytes. I believe that is primarily because, doing more than that takes both time and effort (the effort is both in seeking to understand, reflecting on an issue and reaching a point of view on the issue and arguably the article or broadcast). Not to mention that many people do not find that process in any way pleasurable.

Now I'll read the article

Edit: My comment is, of course, in response to

I almost wonder if the Democrats' strategy might be to push on with the impeachment, knowing full well that he'll be acquitted in the "trial" in the Senate. But with the intention that one of a couple of things may occur:

The "outrage" of his acquittal might actually activate some of the voters who generally don't bother to vote and turn the elections (President AND Congress). There would still be the issue of Russian interference to contend with here - not to mention the whole question of whether DT would surrender the office even if defeated at the polls.

or The Donald (who is clearly reacting badly already to all of this) may well be pushed over the edge to either commit a clearly terrible act or simply to suffer a physical or mental breakdown rendering him clearly incapable of remaining in office - whether to be removed by election or by use of the 25th Amendment (where the VP declares him unfit for office).

Not pleasant options, but that's where we seem to find ourselves.
