Here we go again………..

So the new radars being installed are being vandalised as soon as they are functional (60 000 euros each to replace).

What do the vandals want?
No more radars?
No more traffic control?
No more police?

OK one can admire the revolutionary spirit of 1789, still alive and well. Making itself heard.

But who are they? And what are we supposed to hear? Does anyone believe that they represent the majority of the French population?

To destroy for the sake of destroying is puerile. To act anonymously is pathetic. Radars save lives, just like seat belts and air bags.

Show yourselves, tell us what you hope to achieve, what is the point. But of course that requires guts, brains and sacrifice. Not a lot of that around.

No idea who they are! I suspect they are anti-speed fines, anti-80k, perhaps you should ask Smeg. It certainly wasn't me!

And I wouldn't just jump to the conclusion it was the GJs, who in any case are not a homogenous movement.

I didn't mention the GJs.

Oddly enough, I had an appointment today at some distance from home that involved my driving on one of the routes nationales where the speed limit changes at least every km or so. At various points in the road it goes from 70 to 90, then back to 70 and for several stretches, down to 50 even. I've always made a serious effort to not exceed the limit - but it was clear today that there aren't that many of us out there who bother.

It seems to me that in France, they pass lots of laws that are intended to do something worthwhile - promote safety, help the environment in some way, preserve rights, whatever - but the French aren't terribly good at actually enforcing these laws they enact. Maybe it's the distaste for confrontation - but the use of radar machines, and the fact of this sort of covert vandalism to disable them seems to be part of the "anonymous" way that the French deal with conflict.

Well, I think it's vandalism pure and simple, not a group.

Those of the left are more concerned with the contre-sommet du G7, AMFi and other 'summer universities, etc. Those attending the AMFi are interested in far bigger issues than the new radar system.

But it's not as if complaining on this forum will achieve anything at all, given that most here can't vote and that many of them are actually against the 80k limit (not that I am saying they are responsible for the vandalism, I certainly doubt it).

Or perhaps it's the Scots, Irish and Welsh who are apparently a very bad lot

Those who can vote can always join a political party in order to try to get their voices heard, maybe even get themselves on a list for the municipales.

Stop worrying VERITE, a strategically placed radar will make 60 k euros in about 3 days.

Radars save lives in only very specific locations. Others are only there to make money.

Most radars are dangerous.

Most radars are dangerous.... s'like saying that most dogs are dangerous. It's the person behind the wheel (or the lead) who is dangerous.

I thought that the Bistro was for "off topic discussions". I thought that some might agree with me and others not and it would lead to a chat. I wasn't after replacing the present occupant of the Elysée.

Come on, folks - lighten up. 99% of the Internet these days is for bitching about things that individuals can't do much or anything about.

And it's not all that certain that "most here can't vote" - just because they have chosen not to take French nationality when they are good and qualified to do so doesn't let them off the hook quite so easily. They don't vote on everything here in France - in fact, compared to many countries, we're rather limited in what we can and do vote for. What we do vote for are individuals to govern in a responsible manner and to enact (and enforce) laws that serve the general welfare, not the prejudices or convictions of only the vocal people. (Not that that is working out so well in the current political climate - but I digress.)

I share Verités dismay at the vandalism being carried out on the new (and improved?) radar machines, bought, repaired and replaced at taxpayer expense. So sabotaging the things does seem to be shooting yourself in the foot.
