Default Mopeds in France

Hi all, first post here.
I've visited France many times since the age of about 14 and I'm seriously considering moving to there after my degree, so I was thinking of popping over on a ferry for a little tour on the motorbike
I don't have a full licence but have the Compulsory Basic Training(CBT) so I can ride up to a 125cc here in the UK, I've been told that this will count for jack-all in France even though we have the whole EU thing. I've been informed by a mate that I may be allowed to drive up to a 50cc without any licence or training at all. If this is true, that's be fine, I have a 49cc scooter at-hand and would put-up with it over there for a week or so.

So basically, is that true?

Thanks
Callum

The rules for driving a motorbike have changed recently (well, within the last year or two). There is a category of license here for the bikes under 125cc, and as far as I can make out from this page Conduire en France avec un permis d'un autre pays européen - Service-public.fr it seems like you would need to have the UK equivalent of the category A motorbike license.
Cheers,
Bev

It also depends on whether you have a full car licence or when you passed your test because there are 'equivalences'. From the services public site (I can't post a link as I haven't been a member long enough):

Quote:
Équivalence

Peuvent conduire les véhicules de catégorie A1 les titulaires des permis suivants :

A,

A2, A3, A ancienne définition,
