Question Moving from UK to France Not Working & Not Retired - Health Care and driving?

Hi
I'm moving to France in the the Spring 2016. I am currently full time employed and I'm giving up my job to take a year holiday (maybe longer) in France i.e. not retiring.

Do I need private healthcare to cover 100% of costs or does the UK/EU provide healthcare for the first 2 years?

Do I need to register my vehicle? And do I tax it and insure it in the UK or France?

Thanks in advance

Trazar

They used to, but they don't any more. You'll need private health cover.

If you are going to reside in France then you need to register your car in France and get insurance for it in France. This is the page I found on importing a vehicle from an EU member state, which I think is what applies here: L’importation en France d’un véhicule - France-Diplomatie - Ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Développement international

But if anyone has a better official site to explain how this is suppoed to work, please chime in here.
Cheers,
Bev

Re: Your health. An EHIC aka E111 will cover some off your costs and you should look at this link.
Healthcare in France - Healthcare abroad - NHS Choices
If you do not your insurance company may refuse to pay out on the costs that would have been covered.

If you do not your insurance company may refuse to pay out on the costs that would have been covered.
But the OP appears to be intending to move France rather than simply come here as a visitor. When you move abroad you no longer qualify for NHS cover and your UK-issued EHIC is no longer valid. If you look at the bottom rubric Living Abroad and follow the link, it explains that

"If you are moving abroad on a permanent basis, you will no longer be entitled to medical treatment under normal NHS rules. This is because the NHS is a residence-based healthcare system. Youll also have to notify your GP so that you and your family can be removed from the NHS register.
Most people will no longer be entitled to use your UK-issued European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to access healthcare abroad."

This is quite a good site to explain about car registration etc
EU - Car registration in the EU - Citizens - Your Europe - Your Europe
(I believe France still has a 1-month limit rather than the 6 months mentioned here.)

It all comes down really to what the OP's long-term intentions are - is the OP a UK resident making a temporary visit to France (ie is he or she retaining their home in the UK, returning there on a regular basis during the visit, and intending to go back and resume work in the UK at a foreseeable time in the future; or is the OP leaving the UK, cutting their ties and moving to France for the foreseeable future).
