Default Living outside of france more than 6 mos/yr but married to French citizen

I'm married to a French citizen and have been living in France for 3 years. In May of 2012 I could have applied for my 10 Yr Carte de Sejour however since I'm taking a job that allows me to be in France only 4 to 5 months a year beginning this summer, 2011, I won't meet the 6 mos/yr in France requirement for that application. According to the Prefecture, I must live in France at least 6 mos/yr to apply for any Carte de Sejour renewal. I could not find work in our small city in the Alps after three years of looking and trying to develop businesses so I had no choice than to return to the US for an income since my husband can't afford to support me once he retires this summer. What my husband didnt ask the Prefecture was what does that mean to me legally:

Do I revert back to a Tourist Visa, only being allowed to visit my husband in France 90 days during each 180 day period of time? This would cause a problem since I could, according to my new job, stay 4 to 5 months a year in France and I'd want to do it all at once.

Do I lose my Carte Vitale and my right to work in France? Lose my Auto-Entrepreneur status?

If I ever quit the job and get my France Tours to a place where they could support me financially and can return to France for more than 6 mos/yr, do I have to start the process all over again or can I just apply for the 10 Year Carte de Sejour at that time (rather than go through the 3 year process again)?

It's a mess for sure so I'd appreciate any feedback, referral sites, or others' experiences. Thanks, Confused in France
