Default Expats in Lyon / Beaujolais area

Hi there,

I live to the North of Lyon (and have done for the last 8 years) with my French wife, and 2 sons of 5 and 3. Although we have lots of French friends and my wife's family live close by, I'm kind of missing the banter of speaking English to a native speaker. It would also be good for my kids to hear people other than me speak English so that they understand just why I keep trying to make them talk in English to me!

Are there any people around and about who fancy meeting up for a drink?

Thanks,

Will.

We do seem to have a number of forum members in the Lyon area, though many are students and may have pretty tight schedules or limited transport options.

You should also look into organizations like the AVF. Lyon has a large group with its own "international" section avflyonrhone - Espace de communication de l'AVF Lyon Rhône

While you're hardly a "newcomer" to the area, it can be a nice way to hook up with other English speakers and/or to find out about other expat groups in the area.
Cheers,
Bev

Hi,

I'm English speaking - South African and my husband is french and our kids are 8 and 10 , but I live to the South West of Lyon in a town called Brignais, so we're not really in the same region. I've been really silly and haven't spoke to my kids at all.... They would need to hear English more often too. I have met a few English speakers as I teach English, but we don't see each other outside of work, maybe trying the associations mentioned by Bev could be a good start ?

I think the problem is that many of these associations are mainly frequented by expats who are temporarily based in the country on company contracts, and they won't be staying in France for the long haul. I also find expat circles to be a bit closed and exclusive from my experience of the expat community in Brussels and other countries I have lived in.

Thanks for your reply.

I work in St Genis Laval, so about 2 kms from where you live (I work at Camping Gaz if you know where that is).

I'll try the associations as it's a good place to start, and go from there.

Hi, you do work really close to where I live. I hope this association does yield something positive. I suppose if you're looking to meet for a drink once in a while it's more likely to be in Lyon where there are probably a couple of Irish pubs. Otherwise for the more family oriented thing, it's perhaps more likely to be the suburbs.

You must have face nightmarish traffic every day of you're driving over from the North of Lyon

I takes me about 45 minutes each way to get to work, so not too bad. I've been there 8 years now, so you kind of get used to it after a while. It gives me a chance to listen to BBC podcasts every week!

Hi there, I have just found this forum! I live a couple of hours away in Saone Loire region,Burgundy. If you are ever in Burgundy or If am near Lyon would be great to meet up. I too am married but without children. I know what you mean about missing the English banter! I am 25, and have been living with my husband in France for coming up to two years. We brought our house back in 2005 and have been busy rennovating it and establishing our own business. Let me know if you are ever in the area, and you and your family are welcome to visit. Best Wishes Lorna (username bobble) Ps-we have alot of good English friends, of all different ages inc our parents with houses in Burgundy so could introduce you to friends/family if you are in the area!

That's ok We live near a town called "Bourbon Lancy" in a small country village. We used to have a shop in the south East of England, offering a wide range of printing and design services. We sold the shop, when we moved to france, but are currently setting up an online business selling high quality printed garments. The paperwork has taken a while but should be up and running next month if all goes to plan! We hope to eventually get a shop in France, but as it was a big move for us, moving toFrance, we feel it is wiser to get to grips more with the language and culture before buying a shop.Plus we have had so much work to do rennovating our house we wouldn't have had the time!

What's Lyon like, we have done an airport run before to Lyon Exupery but I hear the City is a fantastic place to visit, lots to do and see according to friends who have visited:?!
