Oh goody, US style big business corruption comes to France!

Why they were prescribing what amounts to amphetamines for diabetics and weight-watchers (the stuff was used off-label as an "appetite suppressant") is a huge question and something of a scandal for the French medical community, IMO. I've had some go-rounds with my doctor about branded vs. generic medications that convince me that the doctors must get serious kick-backs from the pharma companies here.
Cheers,
Bev

France is no stranger to medical scandals. Remember this one? France Convicts 3 in Case of H.I.V.-Tainted Blood - NYTimes.com

The thing that strikes me about this case is that if it weren't for this independent researcher, Irene Frachon following up a hunch, the danger may have gone unreported. Looks like there was a serious break down in the system. Who's guarding the public health?

Cheers

Somehow it always seems to come down to some one whistle blower. But what's disturbing here is that most of the rest of Europe seems to have banned this stuff ages ago. It kind of comes down to protecting one of the home industries - but that's how things work here.

There was a report last night on the news about "unnecessary and useless tests" particularly involving x-rays and scanners and stuff. I've always kind of wondered about the fairly heavy reliance on radiology labs and x-rays here. Never had as many x-rays when I was living in the US or Germany.

Well, like Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say, "it's always something."
Cheers,
Bev

Amen to that. Didn't the fallout from Chernobyl have the good sense not to enter France?

You've probably heard about the huge dioxin chicken feed scandal in Germany right now. I won't be a bit surprised if it comes out that tons of tainted products made it to France. Over easy?
