Default Non EU married to a French citizen living in the UK

I am currently living in the UK under a TIER 4 VISA and have a residence permit as a PhD Student. I'm a non EU citizen married to a French citizen My husband lives between Paris and London as he is hired as a research assistant in Paris. Apparently if I apply for a long-term visa for France I would have to certify that I want to transfer my UK residence to France and that would impede me to continue with my PhD in the UK. So the option left is to apply for a short-term visa which is basically not really different from a tourist visa. What are my options? Would it be advisable to apply as a dependant of an EU citizen in the UK claiming that my husband is self-sufficient in this country, even though he doesn't work or study here? Would that make it any easier to travel frequently to France anytime my husband leaves instead of having to constantly renew my short stay visas?

Additionally my trouble is that in the future we will need to prove common living as we're planning on getting settled in France after we both finish our PhD. What this means is that it'd be much more useful if I can begin to have a life in France as my husband is really mobile, instead of being stuck in the UK and wait for his returns. It will be useful both legally and romantically. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If your husband is a French citizen, you can't claim him as an "EU national" for French residency purposes. The EU leaves it up to the individual member countries to deal with the non-EU spouses of their own nationals.

If your husband is considered to be resident in France, then you should go ahead and get a spouse visa for France. One requirement is that you must maintain a home in common (as a married couple) and you'll be taxed as a household, so you might as well have French residence.
Cheers,
Bev
