Default Am I just dreaming

Hi all. I am 46, worked in the retail industry and owned a b&b and am sick of the UK. Thinking of living in France but is it achievable? Would love somewhere hot, or even just warm, quiet, and friendly. I dont know anything about house prices, best areas and work. Could I sell my property in UK for around 100,000 and get anything in France and if so, where? with no mortgage and some savings I would work say 3 or 4 days a week, presently filling shelves at Asda so I am not looking for some dynamic career. I dont speak French but will learn, I understand that is a must, you should always make the effort to integrate into the native culture. Am I living in cloud cuckoo land or is worth thinking about?

Don't want to rain on your parade jonboy, but the work situation is even worse over in France. Plus for that sort of money you would be struggling to buy anything half decent within any kind of sensible distance of a place where you might get lucky and find work. Notary fees for a purchase take out a big chunk don't forget. The move itself is never cheap. The euro isn't exactly healthy but the £ has lost a lot against the €.

Without the lingo, without any special skills to market (assuming that's the case), it would be a struggle. I'm not saying it's impossible, but the odds are always on failure in situations like yours. Unless you bought right at the bottom end of the market, say a small studio in an unfashionable part of a reasonably sized town with a big English-speaking expat community which you got to know very quickly, I just don't see it I'm afraid. Even if you did the latter you would find it hard.

As a Brit there's the advantage of being legally entitled to live in France and have the same social security cover as the French, but even that is hardly enough to survive. The screws are being severely tightened on the paying of benefits as well, in the current political/economic climate.

Sorry if that's rather a pessimistic outlook, but that's the way I see it!

Do look at the recent weather situation in the south of France. If anything, it has been far, far worse than even in northern France. (And here, it's cold, damp and dark most of the winter.) There are still folks without electricity after those wind storms last weekend and it has been raining more or less non-stop, with temperatures still mostly in single digits (Centigrade) except right along the coasts.

France isn't in much better shape than the UK right now - and honestly it's a cold and hostile place if you don't speak the language. You might start in on French lessons now, though, if you want to be poised to consider a move in a few years (hopefully when the economic situation has settled out a bit).
Cheers,
Bev

Not cloud cuckoo land, f'sure - as a brit I despaired of what was becoming of my country, and eventually gave up waiting for the revolution; I realised that there never was going to be any spontaneous cry of !Enough!.

....however....

.....You've got to want to go TO somewhere MORE than you want to run AWAY from somewhere. Why did you choose France? Because its the closest place they dont speak 'albanian english' any more? If so, DONT give up, just think about where you might want to live MORE than France.

All frogbloggers comments are true - but I wouldn't go back to UK for any reason I can think of now. It was easy for me to choose France, I'd had froggy mates here for +30 years, I knew the area, and I was near enough retirement to jump.

DONT think for a mo' that you're dreaming, just make the dream more defined....

Bev - yes - in the south-west certainly! In the south (as in SE) the mean temps have been slightly warmer, but there's been more rain than usual, increased humidity, making it feel chilly. Still considerably more sunny than cloudy days in Provence so far this winter, although you'll always hear the locals complain when there's a couple of raindrops.

French? A big plus if you can master the basics...

minesthechevy - so true, otherwise it's a case of greener grass syndrome, and reality quickly sets in. France isn't Utopia! But yes I wouldn't go back to the UK, under any circumstances that I can think of. However I'm desperately 'homesick' for Thailand right now!

France remains a great place if you've really integrated with the French community. Too much time with Brits and you might as well have stayed at home
