Ah, would this be France if there weren't a few "extra steps" involved? <g>

With the CNF you then need to apply for a French birth certificate from the office in Nantes where all "foreign born" French citizens' birth certificates are maintained. Then, with the French birth certificate you can then get a French passport.

Do you know where I can get the contact details for the office to where to apply for the french birth certificate. I have ordered my fathers birth cert and I am waiting for my birth certificate and parents marriage certificate with the multi lingual form from GRO. When I send off for the CNF can I get my passport notarised as I don’t want to send the original?

Actually, you need to apply for a French birth certificate at the French Consulate responsible for your country of birth, so if that was the UK at the French Consulate in London, unless you were born in Scotland in which case it is the French Consulate in Edinburgh.

It was me who gave you that advice, not Bev. Yes, it is indeed the London Consulate. Details of what documentation you need to submit are on their website and it is the London Consulate that will issue you with your French version birth certificate (2 copies) and send it to Nantes. You do not need to wait to get a copy from Nantes as the copÓes issued by the Consulate are official, albeit Nantes now issues them on fancy (secure) paper.

The nice thing is that if/when you require further copies (which you would then request from Nantes), they are issued free of charge.

Oh and IIRC the French passport is less expensive than the British one. Plus you can request a French ID card for which there is no fee (unless eg. you lost it and that of course allows you to travel within the EU and the EEA.
