Advice: UK reg vehicle (1988 VW camper) import procedure

Greetings,

Would any kind soul go through the steps to import a UK registered, lhd 1988 VW 1.6 Turbo Diesel into France?

I have owned the VW for 7 years and is registered in my name with 10 months UK MOT valid.

I have a friend, near Carcassonne whose address I can use!

Hope to hear from someone, via PM

Many thanks

You don't have enough posts to do things via PM - so responses will have to be here on the message board. No great problem - for every question asked, there are lots of lurkers who have been waiting for someone else to take the plunge.

Well firstly you will have to produce documentation to show that YOU live at said address eg electric bill/tax demand etc If you are trying to use somebody else's address to register a vehicle you will come a cropper. Are you moving to France permanently or are you just trying to sell a LHD vehicle?

Hi

Many thanks.

No not moving permanently!

Merely thought that to avoid returning to the UK just to do the Mot + ferry expense + time, I thought to import / leave my lhd, VW Westfalia camper parked with a friend which I could use it to explore further in Europe.

Or, simply to use as a 'summer house' Then perhaps buy a classic French reg car to use to drive around but maybe with a UK licence, getting French insurance will be a problem!

But according to you, it doesn't seem possible.

Thanks again

'Simplicity' is hiring a car from Leclerc when you need it - for 4/5 €/day. :car:

Not sure yours would get through the new emissions test here.

I once looked into the feasibility of transferring a 1984 LHD Mercedes Hymer motorhome from UK to French plates. That was years ago when the regs were probably slacker than they are now. And I was genuinely living in France. I decided it was too much hassle, easier to break the law and leave it on UK plates and trundle back to the UK for an MOT once a year, which was actually no hassle at all because I used to go back to the UK several times a year in any case.

1988 is not old enough to be classed as a véhicule de collection, so you would need to go through the normal process. For a camping car you have both the base vehicle and the conversion/habitation side to bring into line with French normes.
These links might be helpful (but check they are up to date because they are what I dug out years back when I was considering it)

The problem you have is that France has tighter regulations for camping cars than the UK does. The fact that the UK will register it as a campervan doesn't necessarily mean that France will. If you are lucky it will comply but if it was converted for the UK market the chances are that various modifications will be required for France to accept it.
I suspect that when you look into it you will change your mind about 'simplicity'. And that's aside from the basic issue that citizens should by law register their vehicles in the country where they are resident.

The plan would be to use my VW camper as a 'summer house' on wheels by parking it somewhere in France (rent a spot with electricity / water) Then 'wild camp in another area in France + the odd camp - ground to shower etc.

Afterwards, find / rent some camper barn space and fly back & forth to the UK. No long drive back + petrol / ferry expenses. To me that makes sense and, a simple lifestyle!

The LeClerc car rental idea would also be an option.

Thanks for the tip though!
