Default Health Insurance for Mental Health

Hello and good day to you all.

I am planning to visit France for my birthday and study French while there for six months to a year.

I have been googling for health insurance that will take my mental health issues and provide my current treatments while in Paris, France with not much luck. It is either because I am an American, have a pre-existing mental condition or both.

Does anyone know what I should do and which companies I should search? Or am I doing the the whole thing wrong?

I'm not sure if a public online forum like this one is going to be able to offer much guidance. Obviously, how to find the level of insurance you're looking for depends very much on exactly what your mental health issues are and what sort of treatment you are looking to continue while in France. And obviously this isn't really something you want to "discuss" on an open forum like this.

The French medical system does have some very different approaches to some types of mental health or psychological issues than what you may be used to in the US. Some medications commonly used in the US may not be available here - and vice versa. Other forms of treatment could require that you have a reasonable level of French in order to be able to "continue" with a French specialist.

You may want to consult with one or more of your doctors to see if they know or can find out the state of treatment of your particular condition in France or in Europe to see if the available care would be relevant to your needs. At that point, you might have a better idea what precise cover you would need in an international health care policy that would be acceptable for obtaining your visa.

I think that you will be struggling to find any mainstream private insurer that will cover you for mental health problems frankly Obviously visiting a non english speaking country whilst you have a medical problem of any sort is always difficult so you will need to do lots of preparation to be able communicate the nature of your problem and obviously as Bev says the Visa may be problematic
