Default US social security card

Has anyone figured out a way to get a replacement SS card. I have no idea where my disappeared to but I now need a new card.

Is it enough just to call the SS office here in Paris and they will make the request or must I do something else.

And how long does it take to receive the card?

This is the page you want from the Federal Benefits Office at the Paris Consulate:
https://fr.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen...benefits-faqs/

4th question down gives you a link to the form you need to fill out. To contact the FBU, use their contact form https://fr.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen...-contact-form/

Thanks Bev.
With the new "Real ID" initiative in the States, in order to get any form of state ID or license you need to show your SS card among other documents. Luckily I have my old medicare card with my SS number on it, so that should help somewhat to show I have an SS number.
Will try calling the SS office in Paris tomorrow, otherwise I will send in that form.

If you don't mind my asking, what sort of state ID or license are you going for? I only ask because I misplaced my SS card a long time ago and have been using my Medicare card (for an abandoned property claim back in the US). Recently found the SS card while reorganizing my filing system. But the abandoned property claim has been the only place I've needed to show "proof" of my US SSN in years.

If you have a US mailing address, you can always set up one of those MySocialSecurity accounts online and just request a new card through them. (I suspect they'll mail it to the US address you use for the account - but I'm not sure about that.)

A State ID card. I need that when I write US checks when I'm in the States or fly domestically. Also, tired of carrying around my passport everywhere. If my passport is stolen that is a big problem. If my state ID card is stolen, it's easier to replace than a passport.

Can you get a state id card without an in-state residence? (Then again, I've never had anyone back in the US ask me for "proof of residence" - at least not that I can recall.)

I've used my passport as i.d. when back in the States. And that always seems to throw them - like they've never seen a passport before (which may well be the case!).

One option would be to get a US passport card, which you can get in addition to a regular passport. The card is not valid for international air travel, but it serves as proof of identity for all legal purposes in the US and, even better, it is wallet sized. I got one a few years ago when my NY driver's license expired and I couldn't get it renewed because i was no longer a resident of NY.

More info available here: https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...port/card.html

Not necessarily. In some states all you need is a US passport to get a Read ID license or ID.

solost1992 -- Social Security cards can be requested at any Social Security office or online, as has already been mentioned. The "Real ID Act" requires original documents that validate identity, SSN and residential address. Original documents are needed. Most states list the documents they will accept on their DMV websites. A printed 1099 tax form can be utilized in most states to establish your SSN. When I lived overseas before, we found the proof of residence to be the sticking point. As was recommended earlier, we got the "Passport Card" and it has worked in every situation we've needed a "State ID." Cheers, 255

Just finally got in touch with someone at the Embassy. In order to get a replacement SS card you must send in the application form and your original passport. This option doesn't work for me at the moment since I need my passport for travel. He said I could make an appointment, but the next available time slot is July 17, which isn't good for me either. The card could be sent to an address abroad but it would take 4 to 6 weeks. I will just do it while in the States which should take about 2 weeks to receive. I sure wish I knew where my old card was!
