Question Exemption from CSG with private insurance

Hello,

I'm filing taxes as a resident for the first time and finding the forms, notes, and web sites a bit opaque on explaining how I can claim exemption from social charges for health coverage. All my income is from US pensions and none of it is taxable in France. I do not have medical coverage from another EU country so have private coverage. Where do I declare this status and on which tax form?

Much appreciation for any help with this.

Carol

The sources of your income are enough to determine whether or not you pay the CSG - which is not really "for health cover" but rather a special sort of tax to help reduce the long-standing deficit in the sÚcu budgets.

Make sure you declare your US pension income properly - start with form 2047 and make sure you carry the pensions into section 6 (which is for those income sources that receive a full credit at French rates). Do label your pensions (on form 2047) as being from the US - and it generally is advisable to indicate something like "US Social Security." I noted elsewhere which specific lines to use on the 2042 form. But if it's handled correctly, your US SS (and IRA and similar distributions) should not be subject to CSG.

But there's no place to declare that (or that you have private health cover) - though I'm told that if you are covered by a foreign pension (including US SS) you are eligible for CPAM cover without being assessed for it.
